    • The Benedictine abbey of Brantôme having been disused since the French Revolution, it is by following the foot of the cliff and its numerous caves that we can learn about the 1000 years of history which have shaped its architecture: 33 panels, French/English, detail the events which influenced the history of the abbey and the town (cave known as the “Last Judgment”, the humble and miraculous Saint-Sicaire fountain, dovecotes, remains of a troglodyte mill… ).

The visit ends with the Fernand Desmoulin museum (painter-engraver from the end of the 19th century). Several aspects of his work are staged in the two rooms that compose it (thrills guaranteed!).

The site is exceptionally closed in 2024. Reopening in 2025.

We visited Brantome Abbey on a recent holiday to France touring the area. The Abbey is impressive when you drive into the car park as it dominates the little village that it’s in. We had a wonderful afternoon looking at the magnificent property and the areas surrounding it. There are plenty of restaurants and Cafes to eat in or a park just by the river with plenty of benches where you can sit and have a picnic or just sit and watch the world go by. We had a lovely afternoon and would recommend a visit if you’re in that area..

We wandered around in the cave and totally enjoyed all the history and gardens. Then we ate at one of the sweet little cafes on the street of the Abbey. After that we hit the shops in the little village across the bridge and souvenir shopped my little heart out. Wonderful day!

Visited Brantome for the second time and I have to say its an amazing beautiful place. There are even shops built into caves next to the river which surrounds the island. You can hire canoes and kayaks and paddle around the island and over a weir to complete a circuit. Would I visit a third time... definitely. Fantastic.

Even on an overcast day, the views of this place is stunning. Situated in a chocolate box little town, you can’t fail to be impressed!

The Benedictine Monks originally lived in the troglodyte dwellings (cliff caves). In one of the caves is the remarkable Last Judgement, carved into the rock. We did the self guided tour. The display...
