    • The Benedictine abbey of Brantôme being disused since the French Revolution, it is by following the foot of the cliff and its numerous caves, that one can learn about the 1000 years of history which have shaped the architecture: 33 panels, French/English, detail the events that influenced the history of the abbey and the town (the so-called "Last Judgment" cave, the humble and miraculous St Sicaire fountain, dovecotes, remains of a troglodyte mill, etc.).

The visit ends with the Fernand Desmoulin museum (painter-engraver from the end of the 19th century). Several aspects of his work are staged in the two rooms that make it up (chills guaranteed!).

Exceptionally closed in 2024. Reopening in 2025.

We wandered around in the cave and totally enjoyed all the history and gardens. Then we ate at one of the sweet little cafes on the street of the Abbey. After that we hit the shops in the little village across the bridge and souvenir shopped my little heart out. Wonderful day!

Visited Brantome for the second time and I have to say its an amazing beautiful place. There are even shops built into caves next to the river which surrounds the island. You can hire canoes and kayaks and paddle around the island and over a weir to complete a circuit. Would I visit a third time... definitely. Fantastic.

Beautiful little village that has seen every culture from Neanderthal man living in Troglodyte Caves to the work of monks dating from as far back as 8th Century. Recommended to us by another Brit traveller and glad we made the trip

Even on an overcast day, the views of this place is stunning. Situated in a chocolate box little town, you can’t fail to be impressed!

The Benedictine Monks originally lived in the troglodyte dwellings (cliff caves). In one of the caves is the remarkable Last Judgement, carved into the rock. We did the self guided tour. The display...
