    • The Maison Forte de Reignac, a noble troglodyte hideout in the Vézère Valley

Classified as a historic monument , the Maison Forte de Reignac is a fortified house, that is to say a fortified, semi-troglodytic dwelling place. Leaning against the cliff, it is a strange and somewhat mystical place, which you will enjoy visiting if you like unusual architecture , reconstruction sites and places steeped in history!

Visit a troglodyte castle between Montignac-Lascaux and Les Eyzies

Preserved in exceptional condition since the 14th century and fully furnished from the period, the Maison Forte de Reignac is in France the only monument of this troglodyte type to have reached us completely intact.
Of rare historical interest, this noble den is infinitely larger than one might suspect from the outside. Behind the facade hide impressive underground and aerial rooms : Great Hall of Honor, weapons room, Great Men's room, kitchen, chapel, bedrooms, dungeon...
At the end of the visit, an internationally renowned exhibition on the theme of “torture in the Middle Ages” is offered to you at no extra cost.

A visit like a trip into the past

The tour begins in the kitchen , where the fireplace burns in the hearth. It is a place steeped in history, where the footsteps of the inhabitants of the past still resonate. A first troglodyte room , like a cave built entirely in the cliff, houses a small museum of artifacts and remains found on the Reignac excavation site . The visit continues in the cliff castle, with several rooms on 2 floors and an aerial terrace. Information panels allow you to immerse yourself in the daily life of the inhabitants of Reignac over time.

Nocturnal visits to the Maison Forte de Reignac

Summer 2024, for the first time the Maison Forte de Reignac offers you night visits . One evening a week, come and discover the cliff castle at nightfall, with a particular soundscape and the mystical presence of an entity at your side... a unique experience not to be missed, if you like to have thrills ... of pleasure! Visit the Reignac Stronghold website for more details.

Visited a few castles this week and this was the best. Atmospheric, well explained with an English guide pamphlet and lovely views. Reasonable price Vs some others we've seen and quite a lot to see. Recommended.

Stunning castle so well kept with beautiful rooms and very informative guide book in English. All real fires inside and really gives an idea of life inside. Also grisly but interesting exhibition of torture. A fantastic choice for a day with not so nice weather. Will definitely recommend and visit again

This is the best museum I've seen I'm my life. The whole fortified house comes to live with multiple fireplaces burning wood making smoke and giving the ambience of the chateau, with amazing sound effects throughout the house, with real food and also real instruments and artifacts from back in the day. And so much more. We also love the last exhibition of the medieval torture devices, also real devices. The stuff was super nice. We spend 4 hours inside. I truly appreciate all the effort put in to this museum!! HIGH RECOMMEND THE VISIT 🥰♥️

Breathtaking collection of Victorian-era, medieval and pre-historic artefacts. All look authentic, and a lot of the stuff way surpasses the National Museum of Prehistory in interest. You can touch...
