Cycling along the Vézère: a beautiful escape through the Périgord Noir

Saint Léon sur Vézère
Cycling along the Véz ...

There are some routes you simply mustn't miss during a stay in the Dordogne. This one runs alongside the water, glides under the poplar trees, skirts the ochre cliffs that plunge into the river, and opens up, around a bend, onto villages that time seems to have forgotten. Cycling along the Vézère is 60 kilometers through the Périgord Noir, traversing one of the richest valleys in France, a UNESCO World Heritage site for its prehistoric treasures, and yet surprisingly untouched by mass tourism.

Whether you're a casual cyclist or a seasoned hiker, a family with children or a solo adventurer, this route has been designed for everyone. Simply choose your section and ride wherever the wind takes you.

Cycling along the Vézère: a nature and prehistoric route for all cyclists

Cycling along the Vézère: a route with two distinct atmospheres

The Vézère by bike is a 60 km route, linking the north and south of the valley, passing through numerous villages that are well worth a visit. The route is divided into two distinct sections, suited to different skill levels.

The family section: Les Eyzies – Saint-Chamassy (22.3 km)

Departure: Vézère car park, Rue du marché - Les Eyzies;

Arrival: Le Prieur - Saint-Chamassy;

Elevation gain: only 21 meters, practically flat from start to finish.

This is the ideal section for families and occasional cyclists. Fully secured as a greenway, it connects four emblematic villages: Les Eyzies, Le Bugue, Limeuil and Saint-Chamassy.

From Les Eyzies to Le Bugue (12.5 km), the greenway immerses you in a landscape of cliffs and walnut groves along the Vézère River. From Limeuil to Le Bugue (6.5 km), an easy route crosses the river via a footbridge. From Saint-Chamassy to Limeuil (3.2 km), you'll follow the Périgord countryside before reaching the confluence of the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, offering one of the most beautiful panoramas in the entire valley.

Limeuil
Limeuil

In Le Bugue, a break is a must: the local market takes place on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, perfect for a gourmet stop among the producers of Périgord.

The sports section: Les Eyzies – Coly-Saint-Amand (37 km)

Departure: Vézère car park, Rue du marché - Les Eyzies;

Arrival: Royal Road Bridge - Coly;

Elevation gain: 532 m, hilly, on secondary roads with low traffic.

This section is suitable for cyclists in good physical condition or equipped with an e-bike. The stages follow this route: Les EyziesTursac (D706, Avenue du Moustier) → Peyzac-le-MoustierThonacLe ManègreMontignac-Lascaux (Rue Gabriel Pons) → Coly (Pont du Chemin Royal).

Once you arrive in Montignac, you have two options:

  1. Join Coly and the Flow Vélo route directly;
  2. Make a loop via the village of Aubas before arriving at Coly.

E- bikes make this route accessible to a much wider range of people. This is perhaps the strongest argument for embarking on it without apprehension.

The must-sees along the Vézère

Cycling along the Vézère also means passing through one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric sites in the world. Here are the stops that are worth stopping to watch and taking in the sights.

Limeuil

Perched at the confluence of the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, Limeuil is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France and one of the most spectacular stops on the entire route. The village is well worth the effort: a few steep, cobbled streets lead up to the panoramic gardens suspended above the two rivers, offering views encompassing the meanders and wooded hills of the Périgord Noir. Below, the natural beach at the confluence is one of the most beautiful in the department for swimming in the summer.

Le Bugue

An ideal halfway rest stop, Le Bugue is a lively little town that offers a welcome contrast to the tranquility of the valley. Its market, held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings, is a great opportunity to stock up on local Périgord products : walnuts, cheeses, foie gras, and seasonal fruits.

The village is also home to the Périgord Noir Aquarium, one of the largest freshwater aquariums in Europe, perfect for a family outing. Just a short walk away, the Bara-Bahau Cave offers a chance to discover rock art in an intimate setting, far from the crowds of Les Eyzies.

Les Eyzies

Les Eyzies is the world capital of Prehistory, and the title is well deserved. The village is surrounded by troglodytic cliffs and boasts a density of prehistoric sites that is unique in the world.

  • The National Museum of Prehistory, completely renovated, traces 400,000 years of human history in a contemporary building embedded in the rock.
  • Nearby, Font-de-Gaume is the last cave in France adorned with polychrome paintings still open to the public. Maximum 78 visitors per day, booking essential 2 to 3 months in advance.
  • The Combarelles and the Abri du Cap Blanc complete the picture.

Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère

Classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère is well worth a visit. Its 12th-century Romanesque church, perched right on the riverbank, is one of the most beautiful in the Périgord region. The meander of the Vézère River that encircles the village creates an almost surreal setting, particularly at the end of the day when the golden, low-angled light falls upon the stones and the river.

In summer, the natural beach below the village invites you to swim.

Sergeac and Castel-Merle

Sergeac is an unassuming village, but it hides one of the most authentic prehistoric sites in the entire valley: Castel-Merle. Nine rock shelters are scattered along a wooded valley, managed by the same family for four generations. Visitors are often only about ten, whereas other sites are fully booked weeks in advance. A hidden gem, halfway between Les Eyzies and Montignac, it offers a glimpse into prehistory in a virtually untouched setting.

Montignac-Lascaux

Montignac is the gateway to Lascaux, the world's most famous decorated cave and one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Since the original cave is closed to the public for preservation, Lascaux IV welcomes visitors: a complete and ultra-faithful reproduction, inaugurated in 2016, which recreates the 2,000 animal paintings created 17,000 years ago. The visit is breathtakingly realistic. The village of Montignac itself, on the banks of the Vézère River, is worth a stroll: its half-timbered houses and riverside terraces make it a pleasant place to relax before or after your visit.
