Les Eyzies Towns, Villages and bastides in Les Eyzies de Tayac

At the crossroads between Le Bugue and Montignac, Périgueux and Sarlat, the village of Eyzies is the Capital of prehistory.

Nestled in a frame of cliffs which testify to millennia of human occupation, this village is an obligatory stop on the edge of the Vézère.

Closely "watched" by the famous yellow stone statue representing the Neanderthal, the site was the shelter of our distant ancestors and the place of habitation of men from prehistoric times. The discovery of these shelters from the 19th century, their exploration and the study of their deposits made this village the center of the study of prehistory.

Indeed, in the Paleolithic, the Vézère offered men an abundance of cavities that they frequented. They left traces there bearing witness to the different species and cultures that have occupied them over the centuries. The climate and its evolution have often forged its changes... this is why fauna, mammoths and reindeer have been replaced today by wild boars and deer. Man is gradually sedentary after having cleared the forest, as global warming progresses.
