Following the banks of the Vézère River, you can stop at the village of Le Bugue. Nestled downstream in the Vézère Valley, Le Bugue is ideally located in the heart of the department and almost equidistant from Périgueux, Sarlat, and Bergerac. Follow the Périgord guide in this charming village and take the opportunity to visit the market.

Le Bugue, a friendly market perfect for strolling

Ideally, park in one of the car parks outside the town centre so you can cross the bridge to reach the town hall square. Today is Tuesday, and it's market day. The Bugue market is very well-known and offers its visitors a wide variety of delicious local produce ! Bakers, cheesemakers, greengrocers… The enticing aromas waft through the aisles, tempting you to leave with a gourmet basket !

The atmosphere in Le Bugue is very friendly. Everyone knows each other, the vendors chat with visitors, and they readily offer samples of their products. It's a real pleasure to stroll around. You can even have a drink on a terrace while admiring the Vézère River and the canoes that pass by.

Our favorite? The Boutique Foie Gras Grolière, a family business that has been passionate about Périgord haute cuisine for 65 years now. Located opposite the market on Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, it uses local ingredients labeled “Canard à Foie Gras du Sud-Ouest” (Southwestern Duck Foie Gras) or “Oies du Périgord” (Périgord Geese) to produce delicious foie gras, refined preserves, and even traditional ready-made meals. Step inside this 100% local shop after a stroll around the market in the village of Le Bugue.

Le Bugue, a pleasant place to visit on foot

Next, head towards Vieux Bugue via Rue de Paris and then Grand Rue. Old medieval houses stand alongside contemporary ones; the streets are quiet, sometimes narrow, but very sunny. There are a few restaurants and a variety of shops, mostly selling clothing or home decor.

Le Bugue, a gentle way of life

Heading back down towards Rue de Paris, you'll find the market, now focused on non-food items: vendors selling soap, clothing, hats, and more, all the way to the end of this main street. It's here that you can see the Church of Saint-Sulpice. It's worth a quick stop! Just behind it is the park, not very large but pleasant enough to relax in for a moment. A bridge allows you to cross the Ladouch stream and reach the other part of the town center, towards Limeuil. There's a great viewpoint overlooking the back of the church, its imposing architecture reflected in the water. The stream is very clean, and ducks and carp live there together—they're fun to watch!

Le Bugue, a village in the heart of nature

Head back towards the town center, this time along the riverbanks. Small waterfalls, interesting flora and fauna—you have to take it all in during a stroll through Le Bugue. The riverbanks are pleasant because there's little traffic, they offer a beautiful view of the calm and peaceful river, and they provide access to some of the village's major attractions : Le Bournat and the Périgord Noir Aquarium. There's also a canoe rental shop just opposite: Canoës du Bournat.

Thus, Le Bugue is a very dynamic, attractive, and ideally located village. It's impossible to get bored given the number of activities available in and around the village: canoeing, hiking, caves, castles … in short, all the charm and authenticity of the Périgord heritage is right nearby! There are plenty of events in the summer ; the gourmet markets, for example, held every Tuesday evening, are very popular! It's a vibrant village, all year round, just waiting for you to visit!
