    • La Maison Forte de Reignac, a unique cliff castle in Périgord

Do you like visiting castles? Unusual places? La Maison Forte de Reignac invites you to a unique discovery. Come visit a unique cliff castle, built on the side of a cliff facing the Vézère Valley. Mystical, captivating, surprising, the Maison Forte de Reignac also houses an international exhibition on torture and the death penalty. Come visit one of the major sites of the Vallée de l’Homme.

700 years of existence for this extraordinary noble haunt

The Maison Forte de Reignac is a site classified as a Historic Monument, for the protection of its exceptional and unique architecture. Excavations were carried out on site and 20,000 years of history were discovered. The museography traces the chronology of the place from its origins to our contemporary times. From prehistoric men to the Lords of Reignac, their families and household staff, you will understand the lifestyles of the inhabitants of Maison Forte!

Tour booklet: There are no guided tours at La Maison Forte de Reignac. Everything is done on a self-guided tour, without reservation and without waiting ! Perfect for the whole family. A visit guide for children is available at reception with games to arouse their curiosity.

A castle designed to protect and defend yourself

You can see it from the road, its facade is visible to the visitor, but the interior remains secret until you enter! Much larger inside than the exterior suggests, the Maison Forte de Reignac amazes and surprises!

Excavations suggest that the first troglodyte den installed on the Reignac cliff dates back to the Iron Age, 750 BC. Developments still in place on the rock suggest the arrangement of the houses, leaning against the cliff. It was in the Middle Ages that the cliff experienced its most important period of occupation, it was fortified and it was a real eagle's nest, probably never attacked because it was a strong deterrent!

Discover the Maison Forte de Reignac at dusk…

Thrilling atmosphere guaranteed... La Maison Forte de Reignac invites you to discover its new feature for 2024: a nighttime visit which will take place once a week during the summer holidays. Visited a few castles this week and this was the best. Atmospheric, well explained with an English guide pamphlet and lovely views. Reasonable price Vs some others we've seen and quite a lot to see. Recommended.

Stunning castle so well kept with beautiful rooms and very informative guide book in English. All real fires inside and really gives an idea of life inside. Also grisly but interesting exhibition of torture. A fantastic choice for a day with not so nice weather. Will definitely recommend and visit again

This is the best museum I've seen I'm my life. The whole fortified house comes to live with multiple fireplaces burning wood making smoke and giving the ambience of the chateau, with amazing sound effects throughout the house, with real food and also real instruments and artifacts from back in the day. And so much more. We also love the last exhibition of the medieval torture devices, also real devices. The stuff was super nice. We spend 4 hours inside. I truly appreciate all the effort put in to this museum!! HIGH RECOMMEND THE VISIT 🥰♥️
