    • LA ROQUE SAINT-CHRISTOPHE Troglodyte fort and city, immense cliff located between EYZIES and MONTIGNAC-LASCAUX occupied from Prehistory until the Renaissance, there you will discover the way our ancestors lived.

Remarkable for its powerful shapes, its number of habitats and its age of occupation by man, this site constitutes a setting of rare and wild beauty. This veritable limestone wall, one kilometer long and eighty meters high, constantly undermined by the river and the frost, has been carved out with around a hundred rock shelters and long aerial terraces. These natural cavities were occupied by man from Prehistory, then modified in the Middle Ages, to become a fort and a troglodyte city until the beginning of the Renaissance.

Discover the People of the Cliffs

There you will discover the imprint left by our ancestors on the rock as well as a conservatory of civil engineering machines which has been reconstituted in homage to the great medieval builders.

The Roque Saint-Christophe site offers a wide program of free activities all year round for a fun family visit. Visit our website.

The staff here are very friendly and speak good English. Every display has an English guide too (on the back of the French display). I have never seen anything like this cliff dwelling before. The highlight of this visit was seeing an owl fly into a hole in the cave! I also saw House Martin chicks being fed by their parents.

A chance to see how cave dwellers lived and how that changed over the millennia. An atmospheric place that shows how a village would have used the natural cliffs as protection and living space, with replica machines to show how the work was done. The walk involves steps and an uneven floor, so be warned and the cafe in the car park below serves good lunches at a decent price.

A great place to visit. Informative, historic, amazing. Great for Family and enough to hold your interest without getting tedious. Absolutely astonishing that large numbers of people lived, worked and died here. The tour is at your own pace and information boards are in French and English. The ticket and information centre have all you need and there's a good restaurant at the bottom. Be amazed.

Really enjoyed our visit here-we didn’t have a guide. At reception they said it would take an hour to go around ourselves but it takes less than that. Information boards mostly have English...
