    • La Roque Saint-Christophe, a fort and troglodytic city, offers medieval entertainment for the whole family!

La Roque Saint-Christophe is located between Montignac-Lascaux and Les Eyzies, in the Périgord Noir region. It is an immense limestone cliff, over a kilometer long and 80 meters high. Inhabited since prehistoric times by our ancestors, it was a flourishing settlement during the Middle Ages and up to the Renaissance. Come and visit this unique site in the Périgord, remarkable for its size, the quality of its exhibits, and its diverse activities for the whole family!

Self-guided tours, guided tours, or tours with demonstrations

La Roque Saint-Christophe is open all year round ; it is one of the major, unmissable sites in the Dordogne and the region. It will interest the whole family, from its history linked to our ancestors ( prehistoric humans ) to its medieval occupation, which left traces all over the cliff.

The visit can be self-guided, with a visitor's booklet and interpretive panels. You walk through several levels (80 easy steps) and the large aerial terrace, perched 300m long, offers a magnificent panorama of the Vézère Valley below.

Guided tours are a hit with those who enjoy listening to a captivating story and asking questions. Guides await you during the season for a tour of approximately 45 minutes on the large terrace. Some tours also include demonstrations of medieval lifting devices. These were built by specialized craftsmen of the period and are impressive to see in operation!

Note: A 3D film offers a realistic reconstruction of what life was like on the cliff during the Middle Ages. You'll be able to understand how several hundred people lived in semi-troglodytic dwellings, clinging to the cliff face!

Family entertainment and shows in La Roque Saint-Christophe

La Roque Saint-Christophe offers activities for the whole family during the season and school holidays ! Come and learn while having fun, observe and understand.

      • Music of Origins : Introduction to and discovery of prehistoric musical instruments
      • Investigation game : For children, a short treasure hunt on the theme of cave dwellings
      • Bird, what do you have to tell me? Discovering bird songs and the legends associated with the most common birds on the cliff
      • Flint knapping and fire making : A fascinating workshop to admire the dexterity of our ancestors
      • Slate work : It has been present everywhere in Périgord since the Middle Ages, a stone that is cut to make impressive roofs.
      • Medieval cooking improvisation : Have you always dreamed of knowing what our ancestors ate?

The nighttime show "The Enchanted Rock"

From 9 pm throughout the summer, Monday to Thursday (at nightfall), Roque Saint-Christophe invites you to discover its breathtaking nighttime show. A custom-designed sound and light show with 17 scenes projected onto the cliff, to be experienced in a unique soundscape. Discover Roque Saint-Christophe by night !

A medieval Ascension weekend not to be missed!

Every year, La Roque Saint-Christophe offers three days of medieval festivities, featuring two medieval reenactment groups. Workshops are held throughout the site, and this year, a medieval encampment has been set up at the foot of the cliff. Enthusiasts in period costume will be on hand to answer your questions about herbalism, calligraphy, carpentry, basket weaving, medieval games, woodturning, chivalry, and more… before or after the guided tours! A real knight and his horse will also be present!

For more information: Prices, details and visiting hours can be found on the Roque Saint-Christophe website
