    • The bell tower of the Brantôme abbey church dates from the 11th century. It is among the oldest campanile bell towers in France. It has the particularity of being an independent building, built on a rocky overhang 12 meters high against which the church is built.

Its architecture is characteristic of the Romanesque style which flourishes in the Limousin region and is characterized by the use of gables crowning the bays and by a superposition of four recessed floors. Its tip is capped by a quadrangular stone pyramid.

Guided tours of the cloister, the church and climb to the bell tower from February to the end of December. Limited to 18 people per visit.

We visited Brantome Abbey on a recent holiday to France touring the area. The Abbey is impressive when you drive into the car park as it dominates the little village that it’s in. We had a wonderful afternoon looking at the magnificent property and the areas surrounding it. There are plenty of restaurants and Cafes to eat in or a park just by the river with plenty of benches where you can sit and have a picnic or just sit and watch the world go by. We had a lovely afternoon and would recommend a visit if you’re in that area..

We wandered around in the cave and totally enjoyed all the history and gardens. Then we ate at one of the sweet little cafes on the street of the Abbey. After that we hit the shops in the little village across the bridge and souvenir shopped my little heart out. Wonderful day!

Visited Brantome for the second time and I have to say its an amazing beautiful place. There are even shops built into caves next to the river which surrounds the island. You can hire canoes and kayaks and paddle around the island and over a weir to complete a circuit. Would I visit a third time... definitely. Fantastic.
