First cathedral of the city of Périgueux, until 1577. The Protestants attacked two of its domes and its bell tower which were destroyed. Used during the Fronde as a riding school, it lost its title of cathedral to the benefit of Saint-Front in the 17th century.
The western dome (11th century) is in the purest tradition of Romanesque art, while the eastern dome was restored in the 17th century.
Inside, an elegant pointed arch above the tomb of Bishop Jean d'Asside , an organ from Carrouges (18th century), restored in 1993 and a perpetual calendar celebrating the Easter holidays from 1163 to 1253.
The Saint-Etienne de la Cité church is open for self-guided visits from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Sundays (with some exceptions). It is possible to discover it on a guided tour with a tour guide from the Périgueux Tourist Office, as part of guided group tours or urban walks, by reservation throughout the year.
