Church of Saint-Etienne-de-la-Cité Former Romanesque cathedral to visit in Périgueux

The first cathedral of the city of Périgueux, until 1577. Protestants attacked two of its domes and its bell tower, which were destroyed. Used as a riding school during the Fronde, it lost its status as cathedral to Saint-Front in the 17th century.

The western dome (11th century) is in the purest tradition of Romanesque art, while the eastern one was restored in the 17th century.
Inside, an elegant broken arch above the tomb of Bishop Jean d'Asside, an organ from Carrouges (18th century), restored in 1993 and a perpetual calendar celebrating the Easter holidays from 1163 to 1253.

The Church of Saint-Etienne de la Cité is open for self-guided visits Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. Guided tours are also available with a guide from the Périgueux Tourist Office, as part of group tours or urban walks, by reservation throughout the year.
