    • First cathedral of the City of Périgueux, until 1577. The Protestants attacked two of its cupolas and its bell tower which were destroyed. Used during the Fronde as a riding school, it lost its title of cathedral in favor of Saint-Front in the XVIIth century.

The dome of the West (11th century) is in the purest tradition of Romanesque art while that of the East was restored in the 17th century. Inside, an elegant broken arch above the tomb of Bishop Jean d'Asside, an organ from Carrouges (18th century), restored in 1993 and a perpetual calendar celebrating the Easter celebrations from 1163 to 1253.

The church of St. Etienne de la Cité is open free visit from 9am to 18pm except on Sundays (with exceptions). It is possible to discover it on a guided tour with a tour guide from the Périgueux Tourist Office, as part of group guided tours or urban walks, by reservation throughout the year.

An imposing building with a cavernous and relatively plain interior - as far a churches go. Nice to visit but I assume the Cathedral Periguex gets all the glory, despite this bring the first in the city!

The tourism office of Perigueux has a map (in English) with two history walks. The ‘Gallo Romain’ walk includes the St. Etienne church. Though the parts of the present building date back to the 11th century, its fundaments go back to roman times, the building is situated within the wall build in a hurry as the roman empire collapsed. The building functioned as the first cathedral of Perigueux until the Protestants destroyed two of its cupolas and the bell tower in 1577. With the construction of the Saint Front cathedral, it lost its functions and the remnants became a cavalry training center. The design follows the ‘ecole du Perigord’ with its typical lines of cupolas. Other well known examples from Cahors, Souillac, Solignac and Angouleme, and of course the Saint Front cathedral of Perigueux. The western cupola retains its 11th century Romanesque integrity, whiles the eastern cupola was restored during the 17th century and given Gothic arches. Inside the church (it has since reclaimed its function) are a number of interesting relics. Interesting stop on the historical walk.

This church precedes the central cathedral, old architecture nearer to the roman ruins which were a source of building materials, west of the centre, worth a look whilst walking the town.

It is always fascinating looking at what remains of a centuries-old building and trying to work out which bits were built when. The church, as you see it today, is a remnant of its former self - it...

Fascinating church on an island between roads off the tourist path in Perigueux. Worth the search to find it, and a pleasant place to visit after the Roman ruins 2-3 streets away. Rest and recover in...
