Last fortification of the medieval enclosure of the borough of Puy Saint-Front made up of twenty-eight towers and twelve doors, saved from its destruction in 1876 by the Historical and archaeological company of Périgord, the Mataguerre Tower marks the entry of the safeguarded sector.
The first tower was cited in 1332, but as it fell into disrepair, it was the subject of numerous and heavy maintenance works.

Machicolations, cruciform archers and gunboats make it a rare example of military architecture in the city.
