Mataguerre Tower A preserved heritage in the heart of the historic center of Périgueux

The last fortification of the medieval enclosure of the town of Puy Saint-Front, made up of twenty-eight towers and 17 gates, saved from destruction in 1876 by the Historical and Archaeological Society of Périgord, the Mataguerre Tower marks the entrance to the protected area.

The first tower was mentioned as early as 1332, but as it fell into ruin, it was the subject of numerous and heavy maintenance works.

Finally, it was rebuilt from 1477 to 1478. This round tower, 17.60 m high, on a polygonal base, ensured control of the corner of the medieval rampart. The building, classified as a historical monument in 1840, owned by the city, can be visited with access to the patrol path which offers an exceptional panorama.

Machicolation, cruciform arrow slits and gun ports make it a rare example of military architecture in the city.
