Directions ÒRT DISTILLERY - Free tasting of spirits from Périgord

About

  • English
    • Brother and sister, we created the Òrt distillery, "garden" in Occitan, in Montignac-Lascaux, on the old farm of our grandparents.

It was in 2019, while Loïs was a master gin distiller in England and Nolwenn was writing her thesis on agricultural soil protection, that we began to dream of a new chapter in the history of this farm. In July 2021, after some renovations and the planting of hundreds of aromatic plants, our distillery offered its first Périgord spirits.

Our challenge was to continue the agricultural activity of this small farm which had remained inactive for about ten years.

Our grandparents used to raise sheep and harvest walnuts there. We still harvest walnuts from these hardy walnut trees today for our recipes.

We are committed to creating bold and refined spirits that respect the environment. They are distilled from aromatic plants grown on our estate according to organic farming principles. A unique feature in France: our still is heated by solar energy!

Around the distillery, we have a beautiful area dedicated to growing the aromatic plants that go into our spirits (lemon thyme, rosemary, lavender, juniper, hyssop, caraway, chamomile, angelica, etc.). These plants are organically grown. We have adopted direct seeding techniques and permanent planting methods to promote biodiversity. Our gardens cover a total area of approximately 3,500 square meters.

Inspired by the tradition of itinerant distillers, the recipes of our spirits pay homage to the scents of Périgord throughout the seasons: the sweet scent of the earth in summer, the herbaceous freshness of wild thyme or the spiciness of juniper.

We would be delighted to welcome you to the distillery to show you our work and let you taste our spirits.

You will be able to discover gin and pastis made from our gardens.

Composed of a selection of 12 botanicals and spices, our Gin from our gardens invites you on a journey to the heart of our gardens nestled in the Périgord countryside. Aromatic herbs such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, lavender, and juniper are organically grown on our estate. The pink peppercorns, cardamom, and citrus fruits are also organically farmed.

The gourmet recipe for Pastis from our gardens showcases the plants from our gardens: hyssop, chamomile, verbena, lavender… spices and a spoonful of honey from Périgord, which gives it a magnificent golden color.

We also offer limited editions, such as the comforting Winter Gin, whose recipe changes every year depending on the harvests.

In 2024, we launched a new product: Picadis – The Vermouth from our gardens. We created it in collaboration with Domaine Combrillac and its Rosette wine. The Rosette appellation, located in the Bergerac wine region, is one of the smallest French appellations, covering just 25 hectares. We crafted this sweet wine with the bitterness of yarrow, lemon, wormwood, and gentian. This bitterness is balanced by the delicious flavor of fresh raspberry and honey. Enjoy it neat over ice, in a cocktail, or with tonic for a refreshing summer drink !

Free visit – tasting all year round (by appointment from September to June and from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm from July to September)

Tasting notes for gin from our gardens

      • Nose: First impression: a cloud of frosted lemon, followed by thyme and oregano on a bed of juniper, then notes of lavender and grapefruit. There are also hints of sweet orange blossom and a touch of green pepper.
      • Palate: An attack of juniper and lime opens the palate to notes of spring flowers, fresh grass, and lavender candy. The gin has a velvety texture on the palate.
      • Aftertaste: The experience ends with the voluptuousness of freshly cut rosemary.
