Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, The Essays

Undeniably, the illustrious owner appreciated wines, particularly those produced on his Montaigne vineyards. The fresco of a bunch of white grapes, still visible in the study of the Tower, testifies to the long history linking the vineyard and the terroir of Montaigne.

The Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne plateau, the heart of our Montaigne terroir, is indeed in the geological and climatological continuity of the famous limestone terroirs from which most of the great wines of these prestigious appellations originate.

Since acquiring the château and its vineyards in 1860, our family has been dedicated to producing wines that express the qualities of this great terroir. Thus, the renowned Bordeaux author and publisher Edouard Féret wrote in 1903: " Thanks to the clay-limestone nature of its soil, an excellent choice of grape varieties, and the utmost care given to both cultivation and winemaking, this estate produces red and white wines that rank among the best in the region. "

Over the past few decades, the château has sought to preserve the diverse expressions of the Montaigne vineyard. Our production of red wines is thus complemented by that of dry white wine, rosé, and sweet white wine. For we know that it is this last wine that has long built the reputation of our terroir!

We have been practicing organic farming since 2023.

During your visit, we offer you a tasting of the wines produced on the estate!

I wasn't particularly enthusiastic at first, but it's an absolute must-see. You'll discover where Montaigne wrote his Essays, which are overflowing with humanism and tolerance. You'll also see the château rebuilt by Pierre Magne, Napoleon III's finance minister. I recommend the guided tours. As an added bonus, you can taste the wine produced by the estate and have a picnic in the park. A charcuterie and cheese platter for two is also available. Definitely worth doing.

Warning: the website is not up to date. Guided tours only stop around 4 PM. After that, it's a rip-off! This site is absolutely not recommended for people with reduced mobility.
