    • MONTAIGNE CASTLE AND TOWER IN SAINT-MICHEL-DE-MONTAIGNE

The Château and the Tower of Montaigne, located in Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, are emblematic monuments of the Dordogne, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Known as the place where the famous philosopher Michel de Montaigne wrote his "Essays", this site offers a fascinating dive into the history and thought of the Renaissance, as well as that of the 19th century.

      History of Montaigne Castle

Michel de Montaigne spent a large part of his life in this castle, which was transformed into a family home in the 15th century by his great-grandfather, Ramon Eyquem. Visitors can see the famous tower in which he wrote his Essays, and opposite it, his former residence, a fortified house commonly known as "his castle ".

The castle is no longer the one Montaigne knew. After a long period of neglect, it was bought by Pierre Magne, Minister of Finance under Napoleon III. He was the one who rebuilt the castle from the ruins of Montaigne 's fortified house.

However, in 1885, a fire destroyed it. The castle was then rebuilt by his daughter, Marie Magne, in a neo-Renaissance style. Only Montaigne's tower, where the philosopher had his library and wrote his Essays, survived the flames and retains its 16th-century appearance.

I wasn't particularly enthusiastic at first, but it's an absolute must-see. You'll discover where Montaigne wrote his Essays, which are overflowing with humanism and tolerance. You'll also see the château rebuilt by Pierre Magne, Napoleon III's finance minister. I recommend the guided tours. As an added bonus, you can taste the wine produced by the estate and have a picnic in the park. A charcuterie and cheese platter for two is also available. Definitely worth doing.

Warning: the website is not up to date. Guided tours only stop around 4 PM. After that, it's a rip-off! This site is absolutely not recommended for people with reduced mobility.
