The top 8 must-sees in Bergerac

Bergerac

Bergerac and its history

Before we leave, a little history and context. Bergerac is located in the Périgord Pourpre region, not far from Lot-et-Garonne. It is the second most populated city in the Dordogne (after Périgueux). Situated on the banks of the Dordogne River, this location is significant because the city is intimately linked to river navigation. Here, barges would stop and set off to export Bergerac-Duras wines to Bordeaux and the Atlantic coast. There are no fewer than seven appellations, and its sunny hillsides contribute to the region's viticultural renown. A designated City of Art and History, Bergerac appeals to lovers of fine architecture. Admire its narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses, its golden stonework, its finely crafted and elegant doorways, its fountains, small squares, and statues…

We recommend this stroll through Bergerac's historic center so you don't miss a thing and can enjoy a visit at your own pace, stopping in the shops, choosing your next restaurant, and admiring the superb houses in the historic district. And what better way to immediately grasp the historical and cultural aspects of Bergerac than a ride on the little tourist train ?

Bergerac does indeed have an airport ! It serves cities in Great Britain, the Netherlands, and the Baltic Sea. This is how many tourists arrive, and some never leave, settling in the region and making it a dynamic and cosmopolitan place.

1. The Bergerac cycle path

To visit the town of Bergerac, we recommend cycling. If you enjoy cycling, park at the Tuilières dam in the village of Creysse and take the cycle path that leads to Bergerac, passing through pretty little spots along the river, the Picquecailloux Sports Complex, before reaching the Bergerac quays. Park your bike and go for a walk, as the town center is small and easily explored on foot.

If you have brought a picnic, the banks of the Dordogne are very pleasant for relaxing in peace and quiet in the shade of the weeping willows before going for an ice cream while strolling!

2. Take a ride on a barge

The Gabarres of Bergerac await you for a moment on the waters of the beautiful Dordogne. The Espérance River is a Biosphere Reserve, and on this navigable stretch, you will discover the river's fauna, flora, geology, and history. Spend 50 minutes aboard a gabarre, one of those flat-bottomed boats that once plied the Dordogne, with courageous bargemen braving the elements and high waters in a time when nothing could stop the tumultuous river! A wonderful memory punctuated by a tasting of Bergerac Duras wines … An ideal family outing to refresh yourself and appreciate Bergerac from a different perspective.

3. Visit the Tobacco Museum

Visit a unique and unusual museum, filled with superb collector's items, objects, and works of art! Tobacco isn't just a taboo product that people struggle to give up… Tobacco reflects a part of our society's history, and for nearly 200 years, this plant of American origin was cultivated in the region. A warm welcome and affordable admission await you!

4. The statues of Cyrano de Bergerac

Cyrano de Bergerac is the eponymous character of a play dating from the late 19th century. Written by Edmond Rostand, his character (inspired by the 17th- century poet Hercule Savinien de Cyrano) became world-renowned for his courtesy, wit, romanticism, and… his large nose! You might be disappointed to learn that there's actually no connection between Cyrano and our Bergerac region in the Périgord (well, there is, but it's a rather convoluted one)! To find out more, visit the Bergerac Tourist Office website !

In any case, Cyrano has become the beloved emblem of the city of Bergerac, and we're certainly not complaining! You can see two very beautiful statues representing this proud Gascon with the big nose: the first in Place de la Myrpe and the second, in color, in Place Pélissière. They were created by the sculptor Mauro Corda.

Here, you can plan your wine tours or simply explore the charming surrounding villages, natural sites, and heritage attractions!

6. Bergerac and Santiago de Compostela, the hike

Bergerac is a stopover town, meaning it lies on one of the routes of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James ). It boasts a rich heritage in this regard: the Rue Saint-Jacques, the Notre-Dame church (admire its stained-glass windows and imposing nave). Right next to the statue of Cyrano, in the heart of the historic center, is the Saint-Jacques church. Walkers often stop here before continuing on the Bergerac/Rocamadour route, which crosses the Quercy and Périgord regions. The route then continues towards the hills of the Agenais and Gascony, heading towards the Gers department. This is a lesser-known but often overlooked route that holds many pleasant surprises. It is perfectly marked and accessible in all seasons.

7. A walk in a lovely park and a ride in a miniature boat!

The Miniature Port of Bergerac is a unique place in the region! Children love it, and playful parents have a great time too… Climb aboard miniature, electric replicas of a trawler, fireboat, police boat, ferry, and cruise ship ! On a small pond, you can make circles in the water—laughter guaranteed with the whole family and friends. The Miniature Port is also a very pleasant place to stop for a drink, an ice cream, or even a round of mini-golf-football. Bring a ball to play on the grass in the large Picquecailloux playground!

8. Visit the surrounding tourist sites

The Bergerac region has several tourist sites of interest, don't miss them after spending a day exploring the city's streets! Here are a few ideas (not exhaustive).

If you enjoy traditional games, head to the Château de Bridoire (near Monbazillac in Ribagnac). It's a magical place for a day out in nature with the children. In this castle with its fascinating history, you can play dozens of outdoor games in the park and courtyard, and inside, explore the rooms while playing antique wooden board games. You can also visit the outbuildings and learn about the history of this enchanting place. There's a place to eat, and you can continue your day with a fun race through the hedge maze…

The games continue at the Château de Tiregand (in Creysse), which is a giant escape game ! You'll explore over 30 rooms in this magnificent castle, currently under renovation. The Château de Tiregand (which also produces an excellent wine!) is open only during school and summer holidays, and the themed tours vary depending on the season. An incredible place, as fun as it is beautiful, with panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Looking for a fun and active outing? Check out Nicolas and Nico's Hikes, who will take you and his team on an electric scooter ride through the vineyards. You can also hop on a quad bike and join a guided group tour along vineyard paths and small, winding trails (known locally as "sandarous "). All this in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Perfect for teenagers and groups of friends.
