      LITTLE STORY OF ROUFFIGNAC-SAINT CERNIN-DE-REILHAC:

In the land of Jacquou, Rouffignac is located in the Dordogne, in the heart of the black Périgord. The village is nestled in the lands below the Vézère valley. Remember that said valley has no less than 15 sites which constitute 1 property listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many tourist sites with various themes are open to the visit: crystallization caves, deposits, troglodytic sites, shelters, decorated caves, theme parks, museums, castles, fortresses, gardens. This commune of the Barade forest, is perched on one of the highest hills of the Périgord Noir. It is surrounded by a varied nature (hills, small valleys and beautiful forests) and offers sumptuous landscapes. Real emblem of the Barade forest, The Castle of Herm built at the end of the XVth century, will be abandoned after many crimes. Later, Eugène le Roy set the scene for his novel: Jacquou le Croquant adapted for television in 1969 and for the cinema by Laurent Boutonnat in 2007. The architecture of the village of Rouffignac-Saint Cernin-de-Reilhac differs from that of the surrounding villages, this is due to its tragic history during the Second World War: on 31 March 1944, the village of Rouffignac disappeared under incendiary bombs. Only the church with its portal dated 1530, its flamboyant style interior and a few neighbouring houses were spared. The village was entirely rebuilt from 1948. It is in Rouffignac that one can visit the Cave of Rouffignac, also called Grotte aux cents Mammothes whose cave paintings can be dated to the final and middle Magdalenian, that is to say 11 000 years before JC.

      HIKING DESTINATION:

On foot, by bike, on horseback, in gyropods, on the water and in the air
Rouffignac and the 26 towns and villages of the Community of Communes of the Valley of Man offer 675km of marked trails and a web of 73 hikes in an authentic setting, a preserved nature where the Vézère meanders between oak and chestnut forests, hills and dizzying cliffs pierced by caves and natural shelters. A descent in canoes or a paragliding flight offer even more unusual viewpoints. Hiking information sheets and guide maps are on sale at the Tourist Office.

      GOURMET BREAK

In the summer months, the terraces of bars and restaurants fill up. The Market invests the place.

Traditional markets: All year round, our towns and villages live at the time of the weekly markets. Strawberries, melons, chestnuts, ceps, foie gras, truffles, honey, nuts, cheese, poultry... come to garnish the stalls according to the seasons. "Market" rhymes with conviviality, pleasure and discovery.

      ROUFFIGNAC: Sunday morning

Night markets: In the summer, farmers' markets are set up in the village squares. They are a real festive invitation to meet farmers, breeders and craftsmen. From stall to stall, the plates are made up and the glasses are filled to everyone's taste. The sale is always accompanied by a tasting and very often by musical entertainment.

      ROUFFIGNAC: Wednesday evening

We made one visit to the tourist office and received a very warm welcome and excellent advice for exploring the region. The woman there is truly passionate about what she offers visitors! It's really very pleasant. If you need activities for your stay in the Dordogne, don't hesitate to stop by the Rouffignac tourist office.

We received a very warm welcome at the Rouffignac Tourist Office. The very kind lady gave us excellent advice and suggested places we wouldn't have thought of, which turned out to be very relevant for our family. She also paid very close attention to our 5-year-old son. Thank you so much! ❤️ As a bonus, the office has a free mini-museum about Rouffignac and the history of the local Resistance ✊️, including a lovely model of the village as it was before the destruction of World War II.
