Located in Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac, in the heart of the Dordogne, the Château de l'Herm is a remarkable example of early 16th-century architecture in the Périgord Noir region. A former lordly residence, this flamboyant Gothic castle is currently undergoing a major restoration program aimed at preserving its history, architectural features, and authenticity.

Built primarily under the impetus of the Calvimont family, the new castle came into being at the beginning of the 16th century. Jean de Calvimont, advisor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, then his son Jean III de Calvimont, completed a residence representative of the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

A castle steeped in history and architecture

The Château de l'Herm is distinguished by its flamboyant Gothic architecture, notably its remarkable pentagonal stair tower built entirely of dressed stone. This architectural element is one of the most significant examples of this period in the Dordogne.

The tower houses a sculpted spiral staircase serving the different levels of the castle. Its palm-shaped vault, sculpted decorations, and ornamental details illustrate the skill of late medieval artisans.

Over the centuries, the castle has experienced several important periods: noble residence, site of succession disputes, then agricultural building after its acquisition by the Hautefort family in 1682.

In the 19th century, the monument was gradually stripped of its framework, floors and roofs.

Long associated with the legend of Jacquou le Croquant, popularized by the writer Eugène Le Roy, the castle has been the subject of historical research allowing for a better understanding of its true past.

A large-scale heritage restoration

Since 2020, the restoration project for the Château de l'Herm has aimed to restore the monument's full architectural coherence. Supported in particular by the Ministry of Culture, the Heritage Foundation and the Mission Bern, this project is based on historical, archaeological and architectural studies.

The work involves the restoration of masonry, facades, towers, and decorative elements, as well as the reconstruction of dormers, roof structures, and roofing. This approach helps to highlight a major heritage site in the Périgord Noir while respecting the monument’s preserved features.

Just a few kilometers away, Rouffignac offers visitors the chance to explore its market and discover its magnificent 16th-century church, while the Rouffignac Cave, famous for its prehistoric engravings, is one of the major attractions of the Périgord Noir.

Visitors can also visit Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, a village classified among the most beautiful villages in France, Montignac-Lascaux and the famous Lascaux caves, or Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil, the world capital of prehistory.

The landscapes of the Vézère valley, the hiking trails, the rivers, the farmers' markets and the local farms allow you to discover a territory where nature, heritage and gastronomy occupy a central place.
