Founded in 1133 under the rule of Saint Augustine, it was built in white stone from the surrounding quarries. The abbey church is surmounted by a square bell tower on its dome. It presents a superb "Christ of outrages", attributed to Van Honthorst, and walnut stalls distributed throughout the choir.
Under the protection of the bishops of Périgueux and the Holy See, it quickly prospered and benefited from great privileges before falling into the hands of the English during the 100 years war. From decline to decline, the abbey will regain its lost prosperity under Father Alain de Solminihac. During the Revolution, it will become a national asset.
