About

  • English
    • In the middle of a cereal plateau today, formerly wooded, dotted with vineyards for the production of Monbazillac and Bergerac (AOC), a bell tower can be seen… It is Issigeac.

On the borders of Dordogne and Lot et Garonne, Issigeac is a medieval town labeled Petite Cité de Caractère® which is an exception among all the surrounding bastides.

In the heart of its ancient circular enclosure where the alleyways wind like a snail, one discovers a village of character where shadow and light, wood and stone intertwine, where the alleyways and lanes resurrect the past.

It is while strolling through the heart of the labyrinth that one glimpses the medieval stone houses embracing the unique half-timbered houses found in the Périgord region. Built as early as the 14th and 15th centuries, and having retained the authenticity and refinement of their architecture, they give the town its distinctive character. Photographers wander in search of surprising buildings. For example, at the corner of the Grand Rue, they look up and observe the Maison des Têtes (House of Heads), with its stone arcades and timber framing adorned with carved wooden heads; in the square, facing each other, are the Bishops' Palace of Sarlat (17th century) and the Church of St. Félicien (late Gothic); and on the edge of town, the Provost's House.

A peaceful village in the heart of the countryside, Issigeac now revitalizes its town center with its colorful Sunday morning market and all its events. An invitation to travel, a place for strolling where, at the crossroads of narrow streets, only the cooing of pigeons sets the rhythm of our steps. We imagine life as it once was, gatherings around the fountains and walks along the river…
