    • FAGES CASTLE IN SAINT-CYPRIEN IN THE BLACK PÉRIGORD

Discover the Château de Fages in Saint-Cyprien, a historic site in the Périgord Noir, restored and surrounded by landscapes, villages and cultural activities.

History and evolution of the domain

The Château de Fages, located in Saint-Cyprien in the heart of the Périgord Noir, bears witness to a long history marked by both architectural grandeur and periods of decline. The oldest parts, still visible today, date back to the 13th century, while the Renaissance wing, from the time of Henry II, illustrates the evolution of the site towards an architecture with more regular lines, foreshadowing the classicism of the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the château still retained its roofs, woodwork, and French-style ceilings. However, the accidental death of its owners, heirs of the Maillard-Taillefer family, led to its abandonment. The estate was then diverted from its original purpose and suffered extensive damage that profoundly affected its heritage authenticity.

A heritage restored thanks to a decisive initiative

In 1964, the architect Louis Durand acquired the Château de Fages after several years of extensive vandalism. His intervention was part of a broader effort to safeguard the heritage of the Périgord Noir region, an area rich in listed sites and historical monuments. The initial work involved clearing the overgrown vegetation from the château and then stabilizing any elements that were in danger of collapsing.
This gradual restoration has preserved the original structure as well as certain architectural details, including the Renaissance pavilion and the chapel. The "La Plus Belle France" prize, awarded in 1965, recognized the efforts undertaken to restore architectural coherence to the site and prevent its disappearance.

A striking architectural style of the Périgord Noir

The Château de Fages presents a combination of medieval and Renaissance elements, making it an architectural landmark in this part of the Périgord Noir. The Renaissance wing, characterized by its harmonious proportions and clean lines, is one of the site's highlights. The Gothic remains, including an original fireplace still in place, recall the different stages in the estate's evolution.
The whole is set in a preserved environment, marked by the wooded and hilly landscapes typical of the Dordogne valley, offering the monument a setting favorable to understanding the rural heritage of Périgord.

A place driven by community involvement

The Association for the Preservation of the Church of Castels and the Château de Fages, created in 1965, plays an essential role in the preservation of the site. It intervenes to defend the area surrounding the monument, ensure the protection of the architectural landscape and promote the restoration of the château with the help of the Historic Monuments authorities.
Today, the association continues its preservation efforts while working towards a gradual reopening of the estate. Projects to welcome visitors and collaborate with local associations are being considered to promote this heritage within its region.

Explore the surrounding area within a 30 km radius

Around the Château de Fages, the Périgord Noir region offers numerous opportunities for exploration: hiking trails through the forest, panoramic views over the Dordogne Valley, medieval villages such as Beynac, La Roque-Gageac, and Domme, as well as the markets of Saint-Cyprien and local producers. Heritage enthusiasts can also explore castles, caves, and prehistoric sites easily accessible from the estate.

We discovered this castle by chance during a walk along the "Hermit's Path." This tour is by far the most authentic we've had in the region. The owners will give you a tour of the castle, explaining the history of the castle and its restoration. This is a wonderful project led by the owners. PLEASE NOTE: Tours are open seasonally between 2:00 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. (check the website). If you plan to drive there, be sure to follow the road signs rather than the Google Maps route.
