    • The bell tower of the abbey church of Brantôme dates from the 11th century. It is one of the oldest bell towers in France. It has the distinction of being an independent building, built on a rocky overhang 12 meters high against which the church is built.

Its architecture is characteristic of the Romanesque style that flourished in the Limousin region and is characterized by the use of gables crowning the bays and by a superposition of four recessed floors. Its tip is capped by a quadrangular stone pyramid.

Guided tours of the cloister, the church and ascent to the bell tower from February to the end of December. By reservation. Limited to 18 people per visit.

      • From January 2 to February 3: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. / 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. except Saturdays and Sundays

We wandered around in the cave and totally enjoyed all the history and gardens. Then we ate at one of the sweet little cafes on the street of the Abbey. After that we hit the shops in the little village across the bridge and souvenir shopped my little heart out. Wonderful day!

Beautiful little village that has seen every culture from Neanderthal man living in Troglodyte Caves to the work of monks dating from as far back as 8th Century. Recommended to us by another Brit traveller and glad we made the trip

Visited Brantome for the second time and I have to say its an amazing beautiful place. There are even shops built into caves next to the river which surrounds the island. You can hire canoes and kayaks and paddle around the island and over a weir to complete a circuit. Would I visit a third time... definitely. Fantastic.
