    • The bell tower of the abbey church of Brantôme dates from the 11th century. It is one of the oldest bell towers in France. It has the particularity of being an independent building, built on a 12-metre high rocky overhang against which the church is built.

      Its architecture is characteristic of the Romanesque style that flourishes in the Limousin region and is characterized by the use of cables crowning the bays and by an overlay of four recessed floors. Its point is topped by a pyramid of quadrangular stone.

      Guided tours of the cloister, the church and climbing the bell tower from February to the end of December. By reservation only. Limited to 18 people per visit.

    Visited Brantome for the second time and I have to say its an amazing beautiful place. There are even shops built into caves next to the river which surrounds the island. You can hire canoes and kayaks and paddle around the island and over a weir to complete a circuit. Would I visit a third time... definitely. Fantastic.

    Brantome is one of the most beautiful and preserved village in Dordogne. The Abbey is so interesting and the walk along the river is beautiful. Kayak tours are also available and recommended. You can sit and relax by the old stone bridge in front of the water mill. Many shops offer locally made crafts.
