A dear castle in the heart of the Périgordins

The Château de Marzac dates from the 15th century, it overlooks the Vézère river , it reigns over the Périgordine countryside below and fascinates all those who see its silhouette in the distance ... For centuries, it has been the home of powerful families of the Périgord , until 'that the economic and social upheavals of the twentieth century herald the decline of this fascinating property and the tens of hectares of land that make it up. After several years of abandonment , the château was finally bought at the end of the 1980s by a family with luxury real estate projects in mind. But the finances do not follow and the castle is again abandoned for more than twenty years. This is how in 2019, it arrives at the Bergerac auction .

The Chateau de Marzac

The Guyot family , who already owned the remarkable Château de Bridoire since 2011, discovered Le Château de Marzac. Catherine and Jacques Guyot fall head over heels in love with this exceptional ensemble . With their 3 children, they are already owners of 6 other castles across France, which they have acquired in near ruin , restored , enhanced and opened to the public . They are the saviors of castles , lovers of old stones , who do not hesitate to roll up their sleeves as a family to bring (re) to life these invaluable witnesses of the past and local memories . Sometimes, often even, they are surrounded by volunteers who have rubbed shoulders with these major neglected sites , worked in these castles, housed in the outbuildings. Terrified to see them fall into oblivion, they all participate together in their renewal and in reviving rural areas (as was the case for the Château de Saint-Fargeau and de la Ferté Saint-Aubin ).

In September 2019, Catherine and Jacques move into one of the small no-frills outbuildings, right next to their new wonder. It is a way for them to be attentive to highlight the castle as best as possible, to appropriate the place. They roll up their sleeves , call on their children for help and friends . For months, they rummage , snoop around the empty castle and do everything possible to make the castle “ visitable ”, at least a few rooms… Because they have a project in mind! A life-size Escape Game with a wide ambitious course , which will allow visitors to discover with enthusiasm and education , the castle and its natural spaces . With the Guyots, we make it a point of honor to share our heritage.

The Chateau de Marzac

A somewhat magical castle ... and original

The Marzac site is a sacred place … and perhaps a little magical ? On the estate, there are habitats of prehistoric origin , because a few hundred meters away are the Vézère and the plain : a strategic location on the hill , conducive to the establishment of life since always ... There are also cluzeaux , rock shelters , caves !

There are various original features on the estate, several of which are classified as Historical Monuments . A dovecote , with a very curious round roof: it's a terracotta dome ! There is also an astonishing 12th century cloister , which does not belong to the castle: it was deconstructed (from where? We do not know yet…), moved and rebuilt on site in the 16th century. It was mounted on two floors instead of the classic rectilinear arrangement. There are still old frescoes there ...

The castle, uninhabited for 30 years, has been partly restored and refurnished . You will notice that the roof is new. Some windows have also been changed (for double glazing!), Catherine and Jacques have found the old joinery with small panes, which they restored with their son Louis and hastened to put back in place. Imagine all the people who have looked through these openings for over 6 centuries? Their job is to bring life back to life , but also poetry in the castles!

Inside, nothing! The levels and interior distributions, as well as the fireplaces and woodwork have disappeared. With respect and delicacy , Catherine and Jacques will slowly renovate the castle , room by room ... So that each year visitors (who contribute to this renovation through the ticket office ) can discover it in new ways . Catherine feels that Château de Marzac is “ the most beautiful adventure ” of their life. It is a castle full of emotion and communicative .

The Escape Game at Château de Mazac

Why an Escape Game and not a classic, free or guided tour? Because the Guyot Family likes to pass on heritage to everyone and also aims to awaken the youngest ! This is the case at Château de Bridoire, and at Marzac we discover each room thanks to the enigmas of the game ! Children also have assignments adapted to their age, it's like a double-level reading visit . This is the whole challenge of a tourist site and especially of castles: staying modern and adapting to what visitors are looking for. The bet is 100% won at Château de Marzac, it's a visit that the whole family will love!

The magnificent panorama

A large free car park is located below the castle (drive slowly in the access path, with a city car). Then you are given your mission order and the game begins. After having passed a mysterious and enigmatic forest , you cross a garden (with a pond, both classified Historical Monuments). Your entry into the castle courtyard will be breathtaking and from there you will turn around the building from puzzle to puzzle, passing some wings and rooms, then exiting through impromptu places that will delight children. At the top of the castle and on the promontory terrace , a splendid view of the countryside awaits you.

I will not divulge it to you more ... Just enough to make you want to go there without spoiling the pleasure of discovering this splendid tourist and historical site for yourself!
