Here in Périgueux and less than an hour away, the sites and monuments are so numerous and varied that everyone can take the time to discover them, in a peaceful universe. Here, History and Culture are naturally breathed in the pure air of a changing and preserved nature. Here, the land is generous and offers its most beautiful jewels to the know-how of artisans who transform them into a thousand flavors. Here, we take the time to live and enjoy it.

Welcome to the heart of Périgord!

Périgueux, a city with a history
We discover Périgueux as if we were leafing through a history book. Come and step back in time and discover our history. Many prehistoric testimonies exhibited at the Museum of Art and Archaeology of Périgord take you back to the origins of humanity. The city's heritage also takes you back to the lavish era of the Roman Empire with its numerous remains and its Gallo-Roman Vesunna Museum which allow you to judge the wealth of the ancient city of Vesunna. Vesunna, a city, but also the goddess of water who surprises us with her proud and majestic temple. Your journey through history has only just begun. At the bend in a medieval alley or while strolling from square to square, you will come across half-timbered houses, residences with towers, signs of the wealth of the merchants of Périgueux. In this vast historic district, the cathedral sits at the top of the puy (hill). This building, of which the Périgord inhabitants are proud, has a section forming a Greek cross, topped with domes, of Byzantine inspiration. These various restorations make it an original building. Built on the paths of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle (a World Heritage Site since 1998), the Saint-Front Cathedral remains a major stopover for pilgrims. During your stroll through the centuries, you will also discover finely sculpted and decorated Renaissance mansions.

Périgueux and all around. Discover Greater Périgueux
      Move!

A greenway runs along the Isle River for 23 km through several towns in the Greater Périgueux region and connects to the Isle Valley Greenway cycle route which runs to Bordeaux. This route offers a peaceful and bucolic walking area, without ever leaving the riverbank. Alongside the Greenway, a 21 km canoe route passing through Périgueux allows you to discover the landscapes from the river in complete tranquility.

      Eat!
      Périgueux
, as is well known, is THE capital of "good food". In the surrounding area you will find: truffles, duck, goose, ceps, walnuts, strawberries... and even caviar! Every Wednesday and especially on Saturday mornings, gourmets meet at the large markets held in the center of the city and in front of the cathedral. In winter, the "marché au gras" and "marché aux truffles" are held where professionals from all over France supply the best restaurants. A quarter of an hour from Périgueux in Vergt, every year on the 3rd Sunday in May, the Confrérie de la Fraise organizes a large Périgourdin meal for hundreds of guests, which ends with a giant strawberry tart. The Périgord strawberry tart is the only one in France to be protected by a PGI.

In Sorges, a town located 10 minutes north of Périgueux, the treasure is the truffle. An eco-museum is dedicated to it, where you can learn everything from discovery to cooking.

I bit difficult to find, due to the winding streets in the old town. But staff very friendly, lots of information on the city and surrounding areas.
