Here in Périgueux and less than an hour around, the sites and monuments are so numerous and varied that everyone can take the time to discover, in a peaceful universe. Here, History and Culture breathe naturally in the pure air of a changing and preserved nature. Here, the land is generous and offers its most beautiful jewels to the skills of artisans who transform them into a thousand flavors. Here, we take the time to live and enjoy it.

Welcome to the heart of Périgord !

Périgueux, a city with a history
We discover Périgueux as we leaf through a history book. Come and go back in time and explore our history. Many prehistoric testimonies exhibited at the Museum of Art and Archeology of Périgord refer you to the origins of humanity. The heritage of the city also brings you back to the sumptuous era of the Roman Empire with its numerous vestiges and its Gallo-Roman Museum Vesunna which let you judge the richness of the ancient city Vesunna. Vesunna, a city, but also the goddess of water who surprises us with her proud and majestic temple. Your journey through history has only just begun. At the bend of a medieval lane or while strolling from place to place, you meet half-timbered houses, mansions endowed with towers, signs of wealth of the merchants of Périgueux. In this vast historic district, the cathedral sits at the top of the Puy (hill). This building, of which the Périgord are proud, has a part forming a Greek cross, surmounted by cupolas, of Byzantine inspiration. These various restorations make it an original building. Built on the paths of Santiago de Compostela (World Heritage Site since 1998), the Saint-Front cathedral remains a major stop for pilgrims. During your stroll through the centuries, you will also discover finely carved and decorated Renaissance mansions.

      Le Grand Périgueux

Périgueux and all around. Discover the Grand Périgueux Bougez !
A greenway runs along the “Isle” river for 23 km through several towns in the Grand Périgueux and connects to the Voie Verte cycle route in the Isle Valley which travels to Bordeaux. This route offers you a quiet and bucolic stroll, without ever leaving the riverside. In parallel to the Greenway, a 21 km canoe route passing through Périgueux allows you to discover the landscapes from the river in peace.

      Eat !
      Périgueux
, it is well known is THE capital of "eating well". Nearby there are : truffles, duck, goose, porcini mushrooms, nuts, strawberries... and even caviar ! Every Wednesday and especially on Saturday morning, gourmets meet at the large markets held in the center of the city and in front of the cathedral. In winter, there is the "fat market" and "truffle market" where professionals from all over France supply the best tables. A quarter of an hour from Périgueux to Vergt, each year on the 3rd Sunday in May, the Confrérie de la Fraise organizes a large Périgourdin meal for hundreds of guests, which ends with a giant strawberry tart. The Périgord raise is the only one in France to be protected by a PGI.

In Sorges, a town located 10 minutes north of Périgueux, the treasure is truffles . An eco-museum is also dedicated to him, to learn everything from discovery to cooking.

I bit difficult to find, due to the winding streets in the old town. But staff very friendly, lots of information on the city and surrounding areas.
