Brantôme: the Venice of Périgord Towns, Villages and bastides in Brantôme

In the heart of the green and fresh Dronne valley, discover Brantôme. The village is surrounded by the river that forms an island, and at the foot of the cliff, throne the buildings of the abbey.

Built in the 11th century, it is the oldest of the Limousin Romanesque bell towers to be built in the 11th century. Founded in 769 by Charlemagne, the Benedictine abbey of Brantôme receives the relics of Saint Sicaire and becomes a very popular place of pilgrimage. Accommodated by the Normans and rebuilt in the 11th century by Abbot William, it had in the 16th century as Abbot Pierre de Mareuil who built new buildings, then his nephew Pierre de Bourdeille, who made other transformations before a total restoration in the 19th century... Visit the abbey church, the conventual buildings and the Fernand Desmoulin museum, dedicated to this 19th century artist.

Discover the village by the bridge, the Bertin quay and its old houses with balconies decorated with flowers in spring. A stroll in the village will allow you to discover the different architectural periods of the place.
