    • Castle Barrière is the only preserved example of chivalrous strongholds, built in the Middle Ages by feudal families.

Located near the old Saint-Etienne cathedral of the City, at the end of one of the main ways of the medieval city which joined it to the borough of Saint-Front, it bears the name of the Barrière family attested in 1245 and keeps it despite the disappearance of the lineage in the 15th century. It consists of a main building flanked by two towers installed on the bases of the ancient rampart of which only the keep remains.

During the Renaissance, it was adorned with a polygonal staircase tower, a flamboyant Gothic entrance door with sculpted decoration, endowed with a curly brace embrace, framed by pinnacles and cross windows. It was burnt down in 1575 by the Protestants... The construction is designated by the term of castle only from the XVIIth century when it is in ruins..Property of the city, it is classified historic building since 1862.

I really enjoyed Château Barrière, sometimes I find the ruined chateaus more intriguing than the intact ones. We walked here from the centre of Perigueux, which wasn't too taxing (I did it in flip flops on a swollen ankle). It's free to look around and there was only one other couple there when we went at 4pm (weekday visit). You can't go in it for safety reasons but there are empty windows you can look through and benches to sit on (cafe across the road if you want a coffee) so I sat and sketched for a while. Nice and peaceful. If you get a map from the Tourist Information office it shows you what other bits you can see in the Gallo-Roman section of the town. There is a red route on the floor that you can follow from one to the next but if you're short on time I recommend the map too (it's free) so you can choose which bits you want to see most if you can't do them all.

Built between the 12th and the 16th century on the city walls which contain stones from the Roman city Vesunna, burnt in 1575 and never rebuilt, its ruins are free to visit and still impressive with a few precious carved stones.

Ruins of a family chateau. One can tell it was quite large and most likely very nice. Destroyed during the Religious Wars, I found it interesting that the home next to it was not damaged.
