    • Just 20 minutes from Périgueux, in the direction of Bordeaux, Saint-Astier is a dynamic little town that is easy to access, whether by train, by car on the A89, or by bike on the greenway cycle route of the Vallée de l'Isle.

Renowned for its Thursday morning market and for the pure natural lime made from limestone extracted from its huge underground quarries, the town with the large bell tower has stood proudly on the banks of the Isle since the Middle Ages.

A treasure hunt "in the footsteps of Asterius" allows the family to discover the curiosities and historical heritage in a fun way all year round. In summer it is even possible to climb to the top of the bell tower to enjoy the panoramic view of the entire valley, by participating in the free tours organized by the tourist office. Remember to book!

Many walks are available all around: step-by-step sheets are available to explore the surrounding countryside in peace, on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike, on marked trails. You can also opt for a canoe trip on the river, or to explore the greenway cycle route over a hundred kilometers!

And to recharge the batteries after this big breath of fresh air, visit the local producers: Craftsmen and farmers passionate about their profession, will share their passion with you and taste their tasty produce. Enjoy your meal !

We consulted the tourist office, which assured us of the reliability of a gîte owner, Mr. Jean-Marc Delmas, who owns the Mas du Barrat gîte (which we rented) as well as those at Mas de Fayolle, Mas d’Auriac, and Mas de Violette. However, he has very unscrupulous practices. Having forgotten our checkbook, we transferred €1,000 to him as a security deposit, a mistake we made by trusting him. Nearly half of this sum was withheld for trivial reasons: €47 for an old toaster, which was already quite worn and still working when we left; 20 hours of cleaning when we had scrubbed the house before our departure; €40 for the pool liner, even though it wasn't specified anywhere that we were responsible for cleaning it, and so on… All this despite the fact that no check-in inventory had been signed. Not to mention the dodgy electrical system (we got several electric shocks while using the kitchen), which is extremely dangerous, especially for the young children we had with us, the lack of safety measures around the pool, overflowing showers, and the lack of ventilation in the bathrooms… This is the first time we've ever had such a bad experience during a vacation rental! In short, avoid this dishonest owner who will do anything to make money off you.
