    • Visit the site of the Troglodyte Village of La Madeleine. Located in Tursac, in the heart of the Vézère valley, the famous valley of Man in black Périgord, it transports you back in time through a lively and attractive museography. For a half-day visit with the family, it is an ideal place to understand how our ancestors lived, from 17,000 years before our era to today, passing through medieval times. The site is made up of rock shelters, caves which have been converted into veritable small houses, places of worship, places of work or meetings.

      A troglodyte village

The inhabitants of the cliffs are the troglodytes. Over time, humanity has occupied these places by developing them according to its needs, the modernity of its tools and construction techniques available. The inhabitants of the Madeleine had everything they needed here to be satisfied: Water, with the Vézère which flows at the foot of the cliff in a superb curve, materials thanks to the forests, food thanks to hunting, picking and later breeding. It is a historic place, since La Madeleine gave its name to a period in history, the Magdalenian. Come and immerse yourself in the daily life, the customs, the way of life of the men at the Madeleine!

The visit can be done on a guided tour, but also on a self-guided tour thanks to the interpretation panels on the site and an audio guide. In season, demonstrations of ancestral trades take place on site as well as entertainment for children. The visit is very immersive because the shelters are reconstructed according to ancient methods, it is an open-air history book! Young and old alike will be able to project themselves into the different periods of occupation and understand how the inhabitants of these places appropriated them.

      The Peasant Farm

The visit to the Madeleine site can continue with the discovery of the reconstruction of a medieval farmhouse. In the valley which is directly above the cliffs, people have always practiced animal husbandry and agriculture in this arable alluvial land. You will discover an old tobacco barn with photos and an exhibition of old agricultural tools. Farm animals, fields cultivated and planted with medicinal plants, as well as an artisanal bread oven.

We wish you a pleasant visit to the village of La Maledeine and its troglodyte shelters.

A very interesting medieval site but there is archaeological work in the prehistoric section so you can't really see the namesake site of the Magdalenian period. I wanted to see that and so was a little disappointed. It was a very beautiful and tranquil place. Your entrance allows you to also visit the farm. There is an enormous amount of archaeology there. Everywhere you look you can find something.

Honestly felt like I was transported to middle earth just a little bit. Staff was very kind, sights were well kept, information was accessible and available in English, Dutch, French and Spanish. Best audio tour I've ever experienced of one of these attractions, extremely relaxing too. Keep up the fantastic work! Definitely check this out if you're visiting the region

Interesting and fascinating place to visit, free parking nearby but the entry ticket is quite expensive considering that the place is not that big. There was a guided tour and we followed it but it was very crowded and we couldn't hear very well what the guide said although he explained well. There is also a rundown castle but a fence doesn't allow getting close to it.
