    • You might be thinking, "Another cave with stalagmites and stalactites?" Sure, you'll see them. But that's not why Maxange has been recognized as unique in the world. Have you ever heard of eccentric formations? These are limestone formations that grow in every conceivable direction. Visible in only a few caves worldwide and in small quantities, you'll discover thousands of them in Maxange. Just 30 minutes from Sarlat, don't miss this masterpiece of nature in this cave discovered in 2000. An experienced guide will lead you through the mysteries of this unique, easily accessible site, a listed national heritage site with two stars in the Michelin Guide. Enjoy our outdoor areas as well, including the park with its children's play area, the "break your geode" workshop, and the educational trail.

      NEW FOR 2026:

Explore the new educational and fun park "The Path of Two Worlds" with your children. A wooded trail, built vertically above the cave, offers children the chance to solve riddles and win a prize (included with admission). For more information, please ask at the ticket office.

Beautiful cave! We joined the 12:00 tour, so there were only 5 of us plus the guide. The guide made a great effort to ensure everyone understood and went to great lengths to answer questions! Please note, this is a smaller cave; we were inside for 50 minutes, and some parts are narrower. There are toilets and a small shop. You can also get something to eat or drink or enjoy an ice cream there!

A marvel of nature, but the very quick tour doesn't allow you to truly appreciate the place and marvel at its subterranean beauty. As a result, I have no memory of it and am left with a bad impression of this far too rushed visit. Furthermore, the route isn't safe for people with walking difficulties, leaving them at the back of the group unable to hear the guide's explanations, which aren't loud enough, especially when you're at the back, sometimes in the dark, trying to watch where you're putting your feet. You don't get to enjoy the experience. It was 5 pm and there weren't many people! Disappointed; give the public more time to appreciate this site, which must be exceptional. The tour is timed, which doesn't allow for any relaxation. The path is poorly secured. I don't recommend it; in other regions, there are caves with well-secured paths where guides give visitors time to appreciate the natural wonders.

Thoroughly enjoyable visit to some relatively recently discovered caves, the only minor irritation being the guide being conducted in French, although to be fair some explanation was in English. The...

Very well worth a visit, tour in French but guide spoke good English and with written handout all was good. The way the cave is lit adds to appeal.

Lovely cave where we took our somewhat reluctant 7 and 11 year old boys. They loved it with spectacular stalactites and unusually shaped formations in vast quantities. Well worth the time to visit
