Montaigne's Tower:
The Tour de Montaigne is a listed historical monument from the 14th century. During a 45-minute guided tour you enter the sanctuary of the famous philosopher and writer, Michel de Montaigne. Visiting the Tower is an opportunity to discuss the journey, philosophy and importance of places in the life of the humanist Michel de Montaigne, a key figure in humanism and a high figure of tolerance during the wars of religion. . Retired from his public duties, he decided to spend "there most of the days of his life, and most of the hours of the day", to devote himself "to his freedom, to his tranquility and to his leisure". He set up a private chapel, a bedroom and a bookstore where he wrote his famous Essays. The old library still preserves the Greek and Latin maxims and sentences inscribed on the beams. The 19th century castle:
The castle itself is a 19th century castle, inspired by Viollet-Le-Duc with its mixture of neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance styles. For 30 minutes let yourself be transported to this magnificent castle. It was Pierre Magne, a lawyer originally from Périgueux and then Minister of Finance under Napoleon III, who acquired the estate in 1860 and had it rebuilt like a 19th century castle, witness to architectural styles from different periods. The latter was destroyed in 1885 by a fire but rebuilt a year later by the daughter of our minister, Marie Magne. Visits are only accessible by guided tours. We advise you to book in advance, by phone or on our website.
