Lascaux Cave is a prehistoric cave that was discovered in 1940. What makes this cave so remarkable is that it is full of prehistoric cave paintings. There are over 600 paintings, some 1,500 etchings, and a number of other figures and dots. The paintings show things such as a 10-foot horse, processing animals, and other images from a period of time dating 20,000 years back. After World War II, the cave was opened to visitors, who would come and enjoy the paintings but unfortunately those eager visitors also did a lot of damage to them. The people coming into the cave destroyed the natural flora and fauna, which then led to fungus that began to destroy the paintings. Because of the extensive damage that was done to the paintings, the cave has been closed to the public. No one is allowed to visit the Lascaux Cave, except for those seeking to do archaeological research on the cave, and those people are very few. If Lascaux Cave were still open to the public, you would be able to go to the cave and view a piece of human history that dates back to some of the earliest people in Europe. However, because of the damage, it seems that that history will need to wait.

Masterpiece of a cave replica. The experience is impressive to start the first steps into the cave with a torch only - this gives you the feeling of a first time discovery. Yet, I'd recommend to visit Lascaux 4 before(!) that you can learn and immerse into the different techniques and details which you can see once more in Lascaux 2 again. 1-2h is enough for Lascaux 2 whereas Lascaux 4 may require significantly more time to visit.

Excellent experience! The tour includes looking at the facsimile with a torch, which is a wonderful experience. We had a very dedicated guide, who explained to us everything - from the discovery of the cave to the significance of the drawings - and this very detailed and informatively. I recommend Lascaux II (over IV). In the Covid context, I feel that we were rather safe. However, there were 1-2 people in the group who wore the mandatory masks below their noses... I would have appreciated a reaction from the guide/security concerning this. Especially because we were all inside a closed space, very close one to the other.

I'm so glad I went to Lascaux II. With the opening of IV, II may be playing out the string. It is getting a bit tatty around the edges, physically, but it still was just wonderful. A couple days...
