    • Salignac Castle, an ambitious historical reconstruction project in the Périgord Noir

Since 2006, a family has been working with the ambitious goal of reconstructing a thousand-year-old castle. Passionate about old stones and history, they are restoring the Château de Salignac together, located in the same commune as the Jardins d'Eyrignac near Sarlat-La-Canéda. Discover the journey through a historic monument built before the year 1000, which tells you its epic story through a major project.

Salignac Castle, a restored castle open to visitors near Montignac

For about twenty years, the Château de Salignac has been under construction. Behind its majestic façade lies a conservation project that has become a family project, where everything is done to restore its 15th century appearance to one of the largest castrums in the Périgord. With patience and meticulousness, the family scrapes, reassembles walls and digs the foundations of the castle themselves, simply leaving the major projects such as the framework to the craftsmen. Since 1040, the building has passed through several hands, undergone extensions, collapses and redevelopments, before being bought in 2006, saved from ruin by these enthusiasts. The various protections have not been enough to preserve the castle, which is still under construction despite the evolution that allows it to open to visitors in 2021. Safeguarding this historical and cultural ensemble is the ongoing mission.

Salignac Castle, an immersion in medieval life in the Périgord Noir

Since 2021, the curious, history lovers and tourists have had the chance to discover the Château de Salignac, which has been under construction since 2006. The self-guided tour provides access to historical and cultural explanations, while following the progress of the work over all these years. Touch, look, admire at your own pace this magnificent castle, the interior of which is beginning to be renovated in the spirit of the 15th century, and enjoy a view from above over Salignac. Between May and October, group visits can be organized for up to 50 people, before the work resumes. Don't miss the summer event every year in July and August, a special weekend where castle life in the 13th and 15th centuries is perfectly recreated with the Opusculaires. Nobles, damsels, ladies and troubadours invite you on a journey through time, punctuated by workshops and activities for a historical immersion. It's your turn to contribute to the preservation of this precious medieval testimony.

Of course, any attempt to renovate heritage sites should be welcomed, without losing one's critical sense. The owners and their families work passionately to enhance the value of their purchase. We especially think of the genuine volunteers. The site is still a badly damaged building. Tours remain limited.

Another amazing project that needs mentioning for dedication and hard work, taking it back to the medieval status and ripping out the Victorian decor. So cool to see the roofing being done and some...
