    • The Périgord is full of castles that rival each other in beauty. However, there are still a few decades, many were in a state sometimes close to ruin. Today and thanks to the hard work of their owners to restore them, they stand proudly on their bases. Salignac is one of the last castles under restoration opening its sites to visitors.

Come and discover behind the scenes!

Behind the romantic ruins or the grandiose decorations, a castle is most of the time synonymous with major works, exciting discoveries, disappointments involving infinite patience and perseverance. Not quite in ruins, but not quite in a state, Salignac, behind its majestic facade, is a saving project.

Discover the reality of the life of the castle, its state of acquisition, but also the stages of its restoration.

After more than 30 years of closure, the Château de Salignac reopened its doors in 2021. Once again this year, the public will be able to discover, behind these walls covered with vegetation, the new visitable parts of a site in constant evolution.

Put on your trainers and come contribute to this challenge: make the heart of a former stronghold in Périgord beat again!

Between Brive-la-Gaillarde and Sarlat-la-Canéda, the Château de Salignac is located in the same town as the Jardins d'Eyrignac.

      SALIGNAC OPUSCULAR

Because Salignac was a place of residence, we wanted to bring life back there. The Opusculars are thus our way of bringing the castle back to life. A historical re-enactment troupe will set up shop in the castle on 16 and 17 July next and will live like in the 13th century.

On the program: visit of the castle, medieval events, combat demonstrations, good humor and conviviality.

Limited number of places, book on https://www.billetweb.fr/opusculaires

      PRACTICE

No toilets in the castle (toilets 300m away, rue Ste Croix, near the tourist office)

First mention of a castle dates back to the turn of the millennium. Typically enough the original wooden structures start to be replaced by stone buildings in the 11th and 12th centuries, to which date back the two dungeons of the Salignac castle. The Salignac Castle has seen a lot of historic changes, reaching its height in the 15th century after which it slowly decayed. The castle suffered damages during the Hundered Years War and the Wars of Religion. During the French Revolution villagers took over the castle, broken up and sold. By 1910 the main building and guardhouse were still standing. By 1912 the Salignac family bought back the castle and turned the remains into a stately manor, leveling most of the ruins and guardhouse to create a garden around three terraces on different levels. The castle was abandoned again, and by 2006 found new owners that set-out on a multi-generational journey to restore this historic monument. They worked 15 years to stabilize the site, replace structural beams and redo the ‘lauze’ roof. In 2021, 30 years after its last inhabitants left, the castle reopened its doors to the public. A visit gives you the unique opportunity to visit ‘a work in progress’. Much of the terraces are currently excavated, which allows for a sneak-peak under the surface. The spiral staircase provides access to the basement cut out from the rock, a room ‘left as they found it’, the central part currently under renovation, as well as a restored room with its ‘pisé’ floor and historic decor.

Very much a work in progress but one of the rooms has been fully renovated to show the standard intended for the rest of the castle. Worth a visit and we will return in a few years to see how it's going.

The chateau is currently closed for renovation work (July 2016) so you only see the building from a distance. To manage expectations, from what I could see, it's not a typical French chateau; it's more of a largish' fortified house. There a some quaint buildings in Salignac close to the chateau.
