About

    • Excideuil, Small Town of Character

On the banks of the Loue, between Isle and Auvézère on the old iron road between Saint Yrieix la Perche and Périgueux, come and stroll through the streets of Excideuil, this medieval city that is at least 1500 years old.

It was home to the greatest troubadours of their time, such as Giraut de Bornelh and Bertrand de Born, the poet-knight, adversary of Richard the Lionheart, and tragic figure in the Divine Comedy. While the castle victoriously withstood two assaults by Richard, the town still bears the scars of a sack and a fire. This journey through time will lead you to the heart of the thousand-year-old and prestigious past of a medieval city whose history is intimately linked to that of Périgord, Limousin, and Aquitaine.

Explore at your leisure with the booklet available at the tourist office (free of charge), and information panels throughout the village. You can also discover the town by playing Terra Aventura and find Zétoulu !

Lovers of gentle travel will be delighted to discover Excideuil by the Fow cycle route, a 400 km cycle route which links Sarlat to the island of Aix, or by the Laurence of Arabia route in the footsteps of Richard the Lionheart, between Castillon la Bataille in Gironde and Chalus in Haute Vienne.

The traditional market takes place every Thursday mornings, award-winning markets featuring foie gras and truffles in winter.

Exhibitions at the castle during the summer, outdoor activities to practice on site and in the surrounding area, such as hiking, horse riding , mountain biking, rock climbing, caving, gold panning … information at the tourist office.
