In the northeast of the Périgord Vert region, on a strategic site once used to monitor the passage from Périgord to Limousin, the Château d'Excideuil was built by the Viscounts of Limoges, who moved their court there. This fortress, built in the 11th century and remodeled in the 16th, boasts the only double square keep in Périgord, connected by a curtain wall. Besieged twice unsuccessfully by Richard the Lionheart, it has witnessed both tragic and wondrous times, notably through the delicate poetry of Giraut de Bornelh, one of the greatest troubadours according to Dante.

The communal area is accessible free of charge all year round : you can stroll freely along the ramparts and in the courtyard, admire the panorama over the Loue valley, and discover from June to September in the rooms of the castle, the exhibitions of painting, photo, sculpture..., organized by the Excit'œil association, in partnership with the Departmental Cultural Agency and the municipality.
