Excideuil, Small City of Character
On the banks of the river Loue, between Isle and Auvézère on the route of iron between Saint Yrieix la Perche and Périgueux, come and stroll in the streets of Excideuil, this medieval city dating back at least 1500 years.
It knew the greatest troubadours of their time, such as Giraut de Bornelh, or Bertrand de Born, a poet-knight, opponent of Richard the Lion Heart and sad character of the Divine Comedy. While the castle survived victoriously the two assaults of Richard, the city still bears the stigma of a sack and a fire. A journey back in time will take you to the heart of the millennium and prestigious past of a medieval town whose history is intimately linked to that of Périgord, Limousin and Aquitaine.
Free visit with the leaflet available at the tourist office (free), and noticeboards in the village. You can also discover the city by playing Terra aventura and find Zétoulu!!
The traditional market takes place every Thursday morning, with premium markets for foie gras and truffles in winter.
