- The Grotte de Font-de-Gaume is one of the most beautiful decorated caves in the Vézère valley. It is located on the outskirts of the village of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac. It brings together nearly 200 paintings and engravings from the Magdalenian period. It is a major site among the 15 shelters and caves, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. You will see exceptional works of art there. The visit is regulated for its preservation and the number of accesses is very limited. You can book a visit directly on site.

I must admit that the reservation system can cause some frustration: the website is buggy and for some time slot it's not clear whether the guided visit will take place in english or french (as a matter of fact there was some confusion on the day among other visitors). Furthermore, they do seem to be enforcing the check-in 30' before the entrance time - I believe the reason is that, because the cave entrance in 5-10' away from the ticket office, they want to ensure that the entire group enters the cavern simultaneously and at the scheduled time. It's a delicate, inestimably precious place and visitors need to understand this. That said, the visit was quite simply one of the most emotional, magical experiences of my life. Moving at times, but also extremely informative. I'm not going to give anymore detail to what was shown, but special mention goes to our guide, who despite the tour was scheduled in french, found himself with an international group and conducted the guide in 2 languages making sure everyone understood and appreciated the beauty and the importance of the place.

Very impressive colored drawings from approx 18,000 years ago. Guided tour with an expert guide. We spent about 30 minutes in the cave (which is the maximum allowed). Recommended! For visits during summer make sure you book long in advance as only 75 people are allowed per day. Also make sure you arrive 30 minutes before the allotted time.

I love this place. 15000 years ago a human painted on these walls and we can still see it. We had an excellent guide who spent time pointing out so many details of the art. Just amazing.
