    • THE CASTLE OF PERIGORD

Let me tell you about my millennial history… I have seen so many things in my walls. No battle has overcome my greatness. Sieges set my ramparts ablaze in the Middle Ages! But nothing prevented me from reaching you. I am not a simple castle… my origins date back to time immemorial. I was one of the 6 duchies-peerages of the kingdom of France! Duke, Governor of Guyenne, of Languedoc, Viceroy of Navarre, Marshals… My family welcomed big names and crowned heads here. Like a beacon, I impose my greatness from Périgord to Agenais… My name was that of a glorious destiny that men and artists shaped in stone ink, giving me the look of a giant!

The castle of the Dukes of Biron is full of architectural treasures and majestic rooms which house contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year. Almost 1000 years of history have carved this stone giant, presenting a medieval, Renaissance and classical castle all in one !

Like an open book, the castle bears witness to the extraordinary talent and inspiration of its builders. Browse the old fortress rising to the clouds, and enjoy the Renaissance city whose surrounding countryside is a veritable garden with a southern accent.

We visited off season so had much of the place to ourselves. The scale of Chateau de Biron is impressive and it stands out across the country. There is access to most of the house and the building and interior wont disappoint. Neither will the views from upper levels

We had a great hour or so wandering around this huge piece of history. The lady at the ticket booth was lovely, very friendly and so was her colleague who was sitting outside. She slowed down her French enough that we could understand the info she was giving about the route round and the discount you get at Cadouin Cloisters if you show them your tickets from Biron (they were once owned by the same famoly). There is an English booklet that you read on the way round or an App that you can download to give you an audio guide with QR codes in each room to scan. We couldn't be bothered with downloading an app so used the paper guide. It was slightly out of order compared to the way you traverse the rooms but really didn't matter. We really appreciated that the place had not been decked out top to toe in furniture, some rooms were very sparse but actually the lack of distractions made you appreciate the history and age of the rooms and their purpose. The restoration of the parquet floor that has been done is stunning, there is a before display to show you just how much work has gone into it. Some of the buildings and rooms just ooze age and you really feel what it would have been like to live in them. If you like the history of Simon De Montfort and Henry Plantagenet, this castle is for you. The views are enough to make the visit worth it, they were stunning, I think 30km all around. We also stood on the roof and watched a Military cargo plane fly by low which was an added bonus. On a side note, there are loos (very important) and they had actually been built inside the castle which was surprising. In addition, there are also loos at the back of the information centre in the village which were frankly the cleanest public loos I have encountered in France so worth noting.

Very nice château, with parts dating back to medieval times and some more modern wings. A self guided tour takes an hour or so and is interesting with some incredible views from the battlements...
