NONTRON AND ITS CUTLERY

 I keep hearing about Nontron and its famous knives. So I went all by myself to see it all and admire this famous craft.

The Coutellerie Nontronnaise workshop is located at the entrance of the town.  Entrance is free of charge. I pass the door and find myself in front of several glass display cases of these precious sharp objects. I decide to keep this for later as I am attracted by the back of the cutlery: the workshop. 

A glass wall allows me to see the knife making workshops and the artisans practicing their craft. I can see them working, they are patient and methodical. They are also curious to see me behind the windows staring at them and feeling so intrigued. 

Each artisan makes a knife from beginning to end. There is no task division, making each knife unique. The thoroughness of the work is fascinating and their technical gestures seem so simple!  

I go back to the display cabinets. Table knife or pocketknife, the knives are sculpted in a distinctive manner.  Occitan cross, animals, rugby ball and other decoration are drawn on the handles! Which one am I going to choose? Luckily there is a small shop to bring back a souvenir! 

This is what I go for; the traditional knife will be very useful during my tour through the departement! Snacking is important!! Another bigger shop is open in the town centre!

Leaving the cutlery, I wander in town. A free access exhibition is just on my way! It is the Arts and craft shop. Each item exhibited is handmade: fashion accessories, table decoration and jewels.  There is also an area for knives and blades. The April and May exhibition are devoted to the « 40 years of contemporary ceramic ». Several unique contemporary ceramics are exhibited. I really liked the faience and the porcelains!!! Make a stop in the Jardins des Arts just below the castle to just relax.
