The Excideuil Castle
At the north-east of the Périgord vert, on a strategic site, from where the passage from Périgord to the Limousin was kept under surveillance, the castle of Excideuil was built by the Viscounts of Limoges, who transferred their court there. This fortress was built in the eleventh century, and reshuffled during the sixteenth century. It possesses the only double square donjon of the Périgord and it has been softened by the addition of a Renaissance châtelet. It has known tragic moments (besieged twice by Richard the Lionheart, but he failed), and wonderful moments having being described in the delicate poetry of Giraut de Bornelh, one of the greatest of the troubadours, according to Dante.
Come and feel the last echoes of love and furor in this place emblematic of the Middle Age period in Périgord.
The public part of the castle can be visited all year. You can walk around along the ramparts and through the court. You can admire the panorama of the valley. From June to September, there are also exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, photos…, organized by the Excit'œil association, in the rooms of the castelet.
