So we did a 7 country 14 day 3000+ mile European Road Trip. Leave from Lancashire UK at 12pm on Sat 27th July 2019. We did the 5 hour drive to Dover. Sat in the P&O queue for another 5 hours as we choose the busiest weekend of the year to be there. Arriving in Calais about 1.30am local time we (I) drove avoiding the toll roads here to Les Grottes de Roffy, Sarlat in the Dordogne. It took 10.5 hours but we stopped twice. Really enjoyed the drive. Most of it was really beautiful and we would have missed so much had we taken the tolls. If you do this drive you will probably pass through the lovely village of Lassay Croisne. Thank you to the Village, its residents and local government. Why cos it's a really really nice village and it has a nice children's park and a Toilet that is clean, welcoming and we were so pleased to come across it. Anyway... Les Grottes for a small campsite site it packs a big punch. Loads to do, very good entertainment, clean new accommodation and facilities and a good central location. It losses points due to the hilly terrain but this is the Dordogne and the fabulous terrain is probably the main reason it's such a beautiful place. It's just a bit of a pain as our Eurocamp Mobile home was as far from the pool, shop and entertainment as it could have been. The takeaway food was good. The shop well stocked and not as expensive as it could have been. We stayed for 3 nights which I think is enough and I wouldn't stay any longer. First (Sun) day was a pool day to recover from the drive. Second (Mon) day we did the Dordogne. We wanted to do the Canoes but French law prohibits under 5's and as out 18 month old refused to wait by the side of the river all day on her own we had to take our picnic and find a stunning location by the river. Which we did in Beynac-et-Cazenac. About 1km up river from the pretty village there is a great spot with a nice beach and the river is clean, wide, low and slow. Great for swimming. In the Evening we did Sarlat. Had a really good meal on the street in a restaurant I can't remember what it was called right now but It was good and only about €60 for 2 adults and 2 kids. I had fois grais, steak, salad, chips and cheese, warm chocolate and beer. Wish I was there right now! Theres so much to see and do in Sarlat, shops, street entertainment and beautiful buildings all really well lit at night. Take lots of money and give some to the performers. Day 3 Tuesday we did the Caves and Chateau's. We did the Lacaves Caves at Les Bertoux. They were great. An electric train takes you 1km underground. Then you get about an hour and a half walk round your in French, but there's loads to see and they are huge. About €20 for 4. * Quick note - in France there seems to be a rule. Kids under 3 years old are free. Simple. We paid nothing for our 18 month old for anything the whole time we were in France. Day 4 - Wednesday. We had planned to do Market day in Sarlat but we decided to hit the road instead and get to our second destination in the Gorges du Tarn as we already had everything we needed. So to sum up Les Grottes. It's good. It's well positioned and there's lots to do but 3 to days is enough. Just one more note. It was my second stay at this site as I stayed here for a week in 2010 as well so I know it fairly well.
