About

  • English
    • "The Acropolis of Périgord", this is how we nickname Domme, it must be said that overlooking the Dordogne valley of 150 m, pierced with caves and with its small streets that descend to the south, this country house is unique!
It was Philippe le Bold who had the idea in 1283 to found Domme, to watch over the Dordogne valley and above all to thwart Anglo-Gascon inclinations.
Endowed with important privileges (it has for example its own currency), Domme plays a major role during the Franco-English wars and is the seat of the Sénéchaussée of Périgord Quercy since the 14th century.
Still very prosperous, going through the troubles of the reform, Domme resisted the Huguenots and it was not until 1588 that the Bastide fell into the hands of Geoffroi de Vivans. The latter will not leave the Bastide, driven out by the Catholics until 1592!
Today, you will visit the fortifications which close the village, and which, like the streets of the bastide, adapt to the geographical shape of the site and therefore follow a plan not rectangular but in the shape of a trapezoid.
Visit the Porte de la Combe, the Porte des Tours, the Rue Eugène Le-Roy, the Place de la Rode, the Rue des Consuls, the Place de la Halle ...
But Domme is also and above all an exceptional panorama over the Dordogne valley, from the cingle de Montfort to the castle of Beynac, meet for that at the belvedere de la Barre.
