On the banks of the Auvézère, heralded by the murmur of the water, the forge of Savignac-Lédrier is one of the most remarkable sites in the Périgord Vert. Documented in 1521, it was classified as a Historical Monument in 1979.
Overlooked by the Renaissance castle of the ironmasters, this wood-fired forge produced cast iron and iron using a blast furnace and a refinery until 1930, a wire-drawing workshop producing long nails, then mainly sardine can keys, continued until 1975.
The factory's operation relied on the use of hydraulic power and the employment of peasant labor, only during the winter period.
The site is accessible year-round; a path circles the forge in an enchanting setting of water and forest. Video tours are available along the route and can be viewed on smartphones (free Wi-Fi on site).
The reception area is open from the beginning of June to the end of September for guided tours.
