A landscaped ensemble between classic rigor and controlled nature

The Château de Hautefort, located in the Périgord Noir, is known for its majestic architecture, but it is in its French gardens and its English park that an essential part of its heritage identity is expressed.
Since the 17th century, the art of the garden has been developed with rigor, attention to detail and a search for harmony between architecture and landscape.

Some of the most iconic French gardens in the Dordogne

Inspired by the creations of gardener André Le Nôtre, the estate's French gardens cover an area of over 3 hectares. Their layout dates back to the time of the Marquis Jacques-François de Hautefort, who was keen to give the residence a classical perspective, faithful to the taste of his time. These are, moreover, the only French gardens recorded in the Dordogne region.

The precise geometric shapes, the sculpted topiaries, the boxwood parterres bordered by grass and punctuated by flower beds are organized around the castle in multiple visual sequences. Two annual prunings, carried out with shears, allow the boxwoods to be maintained in their architectural form. All in all, this represents more than 1,800 hours of work each year. The chosen variety, Buxus suffruticosa, is known for its resistance to the frequent summer droughts in New Aquitaine.

Reasonable management of plant heritage

Sustainable management is at the heart of the horticultural practices implemented at Château de Hautefort. Plant waste is systematically shredded to be transformed into natural mulch. Watering is rationalized, the selected species are low-water users and adapted to the Périgord climate. This commitment, supported by the Château Foundation, places the maintenance of the spaces within a dynamic of preserving natural resources.

A landscape creation guided by history

In 1853, Baron Maxence de Damas called upon the Count of Choulot, a famous 19th-century landscaper, to redesign the entire estate with a view to creating a visual unity between the château, gardens and surrounding nature. The forecourt was then transformed into a vast French-style pleasure garden, while groves and regular plantings structured the surrounding area.

At the rear, a classic flowerbed is laid out at the base of the terrace, facing the main courtyard. These successive redevelopments have allowed the Hautefort gardens to be placed in the long term, adapting them to stylistic developments while respecting their original essence.

A structuring panorama of the Périgord landscape

Situated on a rocky spur, the château gardens enjoy a clear view of the Dordogne valleys. The rigorous composition of the flowerbeds accentuates the perspective and naturally guides the gaze towards the wooded reliefs of the Périgord Noir. The Petite Cité de Caractère of Hautefort, the surrounding meadows and the forest lines in the distance form a backdrop perfectly integrated into the landscape composition of the estate.

Each season offers a renewed palette of colors, between spring blooms, summer foliage, autumn ochres, or the more sober contrasts of winter. This visual continuity contributes to the identity of the place.

The English-style park: stroll and contemplation

The landscaped park, covering more than 30 hectares, gently extends the visit. Its design, also by Choulot, is in keeping with the tradition of the 19th-century English garden, inspired by the return to a freer nature. Shaded paths, flowerbeds, and clearings punctuated by remarkable trees structure the routes offered to the visitor. Among them, the emblematic Cedar of Lebanon marks an imposing stop.

Far from the formality of French-style flowerbeds, this English-style park invites you to stroll, read, or take photographs. Signposted trails allow you to discover the site's botanical richness in a relaxing atmosphere.

Architectural elements integrated into the vegetation

In addition to the flowerbeds and the park, several structural elements complete the visit: a plant pergola of almost 70 meters, a magnolia espalier overlooking the garden, plant sculptures which recall the architectural forms of the castle. The whole demonstrates a desire for constant dialogue between buildings and nature, specific to the great residences of the 17th to the 19th century.

TO DISCOVER AROUND THE CHÂTEAU DE HAUTEFORT

The Périgord Noir, around the Château de Hautefort, is full of natural sites, picturesque villages and local producers to discover.

A few kilometers away, the Tourtoirac cave offers an immersion in an underground universe of spectacular concretions. Further south, the Auvézère valley offers numerous marked hiking trails, allowing you to follow the river between forests and waterfalls. Lovers of rural life can stop off at Cherveix-Cubas or Excideuil, known for their farmers' markets, restored mills and architectural heritage.

The village of Saint-Robert, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, is located less than 25 kilometers away and charms with its Romanesque church and its stone streets. Further north, the Périgord-Limousin regional natural park is accessible for walks in the heart of nature. There are many outdoor activities : canoeing on the Loue, marked mountain bike trails and even botanical trails.

Small local producers offer tastings of foie gras, nuts, honey or goat cheese, particularly in the areas around Coulaures, Lanouaille or Saint-Mesmin. These stops allow you to learn about the Périgord region and its culinary traditions.
