SAINT-ASTIER : a small town with a large bell tower!
From June 29 to July 2, Saint-Astier organizes the Félibrée, the largest Occitan festival in Périgord. Take advantage of the whole summer to admire the city's decorations and the countless garlands of multicoloured flowers stretched over the streets.
In the Isle Valley, only 20 minutes from Périgueux and 1 hour from Bordeaux by the A89 motorway, Saint-Astier is a dynamic small town, known for its large Thursday morning market, its underground lime quarries and its training centre for the Gendarmerie forces. Built on the banks of the river, around a former medieval abbey, the town still has half-timbered houses, a fortified church with a tower tower 47 metres high (accessible in summer), and no less than 3 castles, including 2 converted into guest houses (Château Labattut and Château de Puyferrat).
The surrounding countryside reserves beautiful discoveries, houses of character such as the Chartreuse de Fareyrou, and secret sites such as the Chapelle des Bois.....
In summer it is even possible to visit the huge quarries from which the limestone is extracted to produce the famous pure natural lime, prized for the restoration of Historic Monuments.
Recently, along the Isle, a green road bike has been installed. It allows you to connect Périgueux to the Gironde, by bike or on foot.
The capital of the canton of Saint-Astier and the city-centre of the community of municipalities Isle-Vern-Salembre in Périgord, Saint-Astier has 5,469 inhabitants called Astériens and covers an area of 34.3 km².
