Montpon-Ménestérol is a pretty town of 5,500 inhabitants, crossed by the D6089 (former RN89) from Bordeaux to Lyon, served by the A89 highway and the railway line from Bordeaux to Périgueux. Active city of the Périgord Blanc, in the pleasant Vallée de l'Isle, it sees the meandering meanders of its Isle River, a river full of fish that attracts the favour of fishermen and those seeking tranquility, unfold in the green environment.

The Forest of the Double
A region of forests and ponds located in the centre west of the Dordogne, the geology and history of the Double make it a unique region in the Périgord. The clayey-sandy nature of its soil has led to the emergence of wetlands in this immense forest with flora and fauna of great interest for its biodiversity.
A stoneless country, its half-timbered and mud-filled habitat is one of its main characteristics. Fragile, rare, scattered between the foliage of wooded areas and the moors of heather, broom and gorse, it can be found in clearings during bush walks.
Located near the Grand Etang de la Jemaye, Ferme du Parcot in Echourgnac is an example of double-sided architecture made of half-timbering and cob. The farm, with its wooden skeleton and its gallery "le balet", the barns and the oven perpetuate, through objects, furniture and tools, the memory of local agricultural life in the 19th century.
In a natural setting conducive to peace and quiet, come and discover the Abbey of Notre Dame de Bonne Espérance where nuns reside. To discover: the monastery church. Sale of the famous "Trappe Echourgnac" cheese, a traditional cheese made from natural ingredients or matured with walnut liqueur.
• The Isle River, a preserved natural heritage
The Isle is characterised by wide limestone valleys downstream of Périgueux and it is along this natural axis that one of the four Périgords is formed: the Périgord Blanc, which extends from Montpon to Tourtoirac.
Many developments were carried out to facilitate navigation on the Isle in the middle of the 19th century, notably through the creation of dams, lock constructions and towpaths. But the development of the railways and later, the development of road transport led to the gradual decline of inland waterway transport. The last gabare the "Roger Madeleine" ceased its activity in 1957.
