La Dordogne au fil de l'eau ! |

 Depuis l'époque Gallo-romaine, la rivière Dordogne était la principale voie de communication entre le Massif central, l'Auvergne et Bordeaux.
Après les pluies d'automne, quand l'eau devenait suffisamment haute, c'est au péril de leur vie que les gabarriers affrontaient les rapides de la haute Dordogne sur des "Courpets", bateaux rudimentaires à faible tirant d'eau, pour livrer le bois de chêne nécessaire à la tonnellerie. Arrivés à bon port, ces bateaux étaient détruits, puis vendus avec leur cargaison.

After the autumn rain, when water was sufficiently high enough, the "Gabarriers" (the boaters) risked their lives affronting the rapids of the "haute" Dordogne on makeshift boats delivering oak to the barrel fabricants. Once they arrived, these boats were destroyed, and then, sold along with the goods they were carrying. |
Depuis le port de Souillac, les gabarres devaient affronter les rapides du saut de la Gratusse, avant d'arriver en basse Dordogne viticole, livrer les pierres à moulin de Domme, les canons des forges du Périgord, les papiers filigranés aux armes d'Amsterdam, et surtout les vins de Bergerac, de Sainte Foy la Grande et de Castillon la Bataille. Seuls remontaient, par le biais des chemins de halage, le sel, les épices, et quelques produits régionaux. |
Then, from the port of Souillac, the Gabarres boats had to fought the rapids of "Gratusse", and before arriving to the lower part of the Dordogne, they had to deliver the wine of Domme, the blacksmiths of Perigord, as well as the wines from Bergerac, Sainte Foy La Grande and Castillon La Bataille. The only way to get goods such as salt, spices, and other regional products was to tow them back by hand, or animal, using the paths constructed for this purpose.
