    • Located in the heart of the Vézère Valley, between Montignac-Lascaux and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, this authentic and classified archaeological site presents shelters under rocks occupied by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. These deposits make it possible to understand the daily life of homo sapiens through quality guided tours and you can also experience their daily life through numerous activities (thrower shooting, wall painting, fire lighting, etc.).

You can also visit one of the rare shelter decorated with sculptures still open to visitors. This site has been the subject of numerous archaeological excavations. Its collections include thousands of ornamental items including mammoth ivory beads, perforated sea shells and pierced animal teeth.

For groups (15 people minimum) visits by reservation take place all year round. In this case, an entertainment program is proposed and chosen with the organizers.

This was a nicely preserved site where early man lived. It's actually 5 sites in one but I didn't understand that really because the tour was in French. That was my choice but I believe I missed a lot of context.

Not to be missed ! There were no children in our group who visited during October 2017. We found both the site and the presentations to be most exhilarating and educational. To be offered the opportunity to see and be within this ancient site of human habitation was mind-blowing. Actually going within the rock shelter, seeing the flint-knapping demonstration, enjoying lunch as it might have been for Neanderthals, and having the opportunity to try our luck with throwing a lance using an atlatl was just amazing. I strongly recommend visiting Castle Merle to everyone, young or old !

Superb educational and welcoming place. We were in a small group with a guide, friendly, funny, passionate and exciting. We enter a shelter, the children (and older ones) can paint, make ornaments and make spears, see the guide light a fire... The children are delighted, so are we. We can only recommend this visit. Thank you to the whole team for this beautiful afternoon.

We were really disappointed. Waited an hour for Castel Merle to open at 2pm, to be turned away as the tours are only in French. We asked if we could walk around by ourselves, but we're told as a...

A nice look at the way Cro Magnon man lived. You even get a chance to throw a spear with an atlatle and test your hunting skills. Mine weren't so good.
